Utility Worker I - Water
Location: Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division.
Shift: 10‑hour shifts, Monday‑Thursday or Tuesday‑Friday, 6:30 am–5 pm. Works shift rotations including days, nights, call‑outs, standby, holidays and weekends in any assigned region.
Essential Functions- Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines and related system components.
- Locates manholes, service connections, valves, and other utilities; assists with installation of new sewer taps; clears debris from manholes, lines, crossings, easements, and valve boxes.
- Inspects and evaluates system condition; diagnoses leaks, blockages, or other problems; excavates around water and sewer infrastructure.
- Installs appropriate repair fittings; replaces service lines; performs confined‑space entries when required; cleans manholes and lines; changes out sewer rings and lids.
- Gathers tools and equipment; transports materials; cleans and washes equipment; performs preventive maintenance; notifies supervisor of needed replacements.
- Performs related activities such as sawing cuts on driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads; assists with site preparation and restoration of landscape, property, and other areas to pre‑construction conditions; installs sod, or applies seed, hay, pine straw, and lime where needed.
- Operates and maintains equipment: camera, shovels, sharpshooter, probing rod, jet hose, jackhammer, pipe saw, hand saw, chainsaw, pipe cutters, various hand tools, hatchets, machetes, post‑hole digger, trash pump, hand pump, and other necessary tools.
- Adheres to safety procedures: monitors environment and safety equipment; flags and directs traffic; places markers, signs, and cones around work sites; wears personal protective equipment.
- Provides emergency coverage as directed; works on standby status per departmental schedules.
- Assists with documentation of existing manholes using GPS; assists in condition assessment of existing sewer infrastructure (visual and electronic measurements, smoke testing, manhole entry for flow meters and CCTV).
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED required; previous experience in construction, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field preferred.
Licenses & CertificationsValid Driver’s License preferred. Must possess and maintain the following certifications within nine months of hire:
Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger.
Tasks require heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling moderate to heavy objects (20–50 lb, occasionally up to 100 lb).
Sensory RequirementsAbility to perceive and discriminate colors, odors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues; audible communication required.
Environmental FactorsExposure to adverse conditions: dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, extreme temperatures, noise, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, falling objects, electric currents, traffic, animal attacks, bites, toxins, violence, disease, or explosive environments.
