Utility Worker I (Swing Shift) – Water

Position InformationLocation:
Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division.
Shift: Monday through Thursday, 1:30 pm to midnight. On call from midnight on Monday to midnight on Thursday.
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines, manholes, service connections, valves, and other utilities.
- Clears debris from manholes, lines, crossings, easements, and valve boxes; inspects systems; diagnoses leaks or blockages; excavates around infrastructure; installs repair fittings; replaces service lines.
- Performs confined‑space entries into permitted areas as required; cleans and washes equipment and tools; conducts preventive maintenance; notifies supervisor of needed replacements.
- Carry out related activities such as cutting driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads; aid in restoration of landscape; install sod or apply seed, hay, pine straw, lime.
- Operate cameras, shovels, sharpshooter, probing rods, jet hoses, jackhammers, pipe saws, hand saws, chainsaws, pipe cutters, hatchets, machetes, post‑hole diggers, trash pumps, hand pumps, and other equipment.
- Adhere to safety procedures: monitor environment, apply traffic and safety markers, and wear personal protective equipment.
- Provide emergency coverage on standby status when directed.
- Assist in documenting manhole locations with GPS; conduct smoke testing, manhole entries for flow meters and CCTV; take visual and electronic measurements for condition assessment.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or GED required. Prior experience in construction, infrastructure maintenance, or a related field preferred.
Licenses and CertificationsValid driver’s license preferred. Must obtain Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger certifications within nine months of hire.
Physical AbilitiesAbility to exert heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds (occasionally 100 pounds).
Sensory RequirementsPerceive and discriminate colors, odors, sounds, textures, and visual cues. Communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsWork may involve exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, extreme temperatures and noises, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, falling objects, electrical currents, traffic hazards, wildlife, toxins, violence, disease, or explosive environments.
