Utility Worker IV - Trainee - (Swing Shift)
Position Information: These positions are located in the Cobb County Water System, System Maintenance Division. They will work four 10‑hour shifts a week and be on a scheduled on‑call status. The swing shift hours are Monday – Thursday 1:30 pm – 12:00 am. Night shift includes shift differential pay.
Essential FunctionsInstalls, maintains, repairs, and replaces water and sewer lines and related system components; locates manholes, service connections, valves, and other utilities; assists with installation of new sewer taps; clears debris from manholes and lines; inspects and evaluates system condition; diagnoses leaks, blockages, or other problems; excavates around water and sewer infrastructure; installs repair fittings; replaces service lines; performs confined space entries into permit‑required confined spaces;
cleans manholes and lines; changes out sewer rings and lids; travels to site; reads maps; utilizes GPS and GIS maps; enters and updates department database; maintains related documentation; gathers tools; picks up and transports materials, tools, and supplies; cleans and washes equipment; performs preventive maintenance; notifies supervisors of needed equipment replacements; performs related activities such as saw cutting driveways, sidewalks, curbs, and roads;
assists with preparation and restoration of landscape; installs sod or applies seed, hay, pine straw, and lime; operates and maintains camera, shovels, sharpshooter, probing rod, jet hose, jackhammer, pipe saw, hand saw, chainsaw, pipe cutters, hand tools, hatchets, machetes, post hole digger, trash pump, hand pump, or other necessary equipment; adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment;
flags and directs traffic; wears personal protective equipment; provides emergency coverage as directed; works on standby status; documents locations of existing manholes using GPS; performs condition assessment by taking visual and electronic measurements, performing smoke testing, entering manholes to place and remove flow meters and CCTV equipment; performs other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required; supplemented by two years of experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of water and/or sewer utilities.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
- Must obtain a Class A CDL within one year of assignment.
- Must obtain the following certifications within nine months of assignment:
Confined Space Entry, Trenching and Excavation, and Flagger.
Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, as well as stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials (20–50 pounds) is typical; occasional heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) may be involved.
Sensory RequirementsSome tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, odors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental FactorsPerformance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, extreme temperatures, extreme noises, hazardous materials, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, falling objects, electric currents, traffic hazards, animal/wildlife attacks, animal bites, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances, or explosive environments.
