Job SummaryThe Group Exercise Instructor functions under the direction of the Program Supervisor and/or Aquatics Supervisor. Responsible for designing the components, choreography, and music (if applicable) of assigned land and/or aquatic group exercise classes. Will lead participants through a safe and effective group exercise class at the appropriate and established class style and intensity.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions- Lead land and/or aquatic group exercise classes.
- Understand contraindicated exercises and provide a safe and effective approach to exercise.
- Teach within standard guidelines of specialty certifications.
- Maintain industry certification in good standing and meet continuing education requirements.
- Provide class with exercise movements that are physiologically safe and effective and are of the appropriate intensity for the target audience and established class style.
- Display enthusiasm and strive to motivate participants to work out within their individual exercise prescriptions.
- Use a variety of exercise movements during classes to provide a complete workout and maintain class interest.
- Utilize teaching techniques effectively, including verbal and visual cueing and demonstrations.
- Provide support for daily facility maintenance and operations.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety of group exercise rooms, pool areas, equipment, and other areas of the facility as assigned.
- Participate in team meetings.
- Maintain consistent and appropriate communication with leadership staff, team members, and class participants.
- Keep management informed of customer and facility needs.
- Demonstrate accountability to schedule by avoiding missed classes and seeking substitute instructors in advance.
- Be flexible and accommodating as it relates to center hours and work schedules.
- Meet all safety requirements and certifications necessary to perform job duties.
- Demonstrate complete knowledge of emergency and safety procedures.
Minimum Education
High school diploma, GED, or currently enrolled in high school.
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Instructor
Primary Group Fitness Certification through a nationally recognized or accredited certifying agency (including: ACE, AFAA, NETA, NESTA, NAFTA, ACSM, NASM, AEA, USWFA, ISSA, MOSSA, Schwinn, Yoga Alliance, Pilates Alliance, NSCA, or other similar certifications).
Required Minimum ExperienceMinimum 1 year of experience in group exercise instruction; training will be provided under leadership supervision.
