Position: Part-Time Lifeguard/Instructor- All Aquatic Centers

Part‑Time Lifeguard/Instructor – All Aquatic Centers

Position Information:
All positions are part‑time and located in the Cobb County Parks Department. Applicants may be hired as a Lifeguard or a Lifeguard/Instructor depending on qualifications. Applicants must pass a pre‑course swimming skills test before taking lifeguarding courses.

Water Skills Test Requirements
  • 300‑yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke.
  • Two‑minute tread using legs only.
  • Retrieve a 10‑lb dive weight from 7 feet deep, surface, swim 20 yards with the weight using legs only, and exit the pool without a ladder within 100 seconds.

Compensation

Lifeguard: $17.00/hr (Grade 100P)

Lifeguard/Instructor: $17.51/hr (Grade 101P)

Essential Functions Part‑Time Lifeguard
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; oversee safety procedures; monitor work environment and use of safety equipment.
  • Observe and oversee swimmers: scan the water; enforce pool rules; maintain discipline; take preventive safety actions; rescue distressed swimmers; provide emergency first aid and CPR; perform other lifesaving services as needed.
  • Maintain swimming pool and facility: assist in opening; clean restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, pool deck, and furniture; stock paper goods; maintain related documentation.
  • Perform customer service: provide information and answers regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees, and other issues; respond to questions and complaints; resolve problems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Part‑Time Lifeguard/Instructor
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; oversee safety procedures; monitor work environment and use of safety equipment.
  • Observe and oversee swimmers: scan the water; enforce pool rules; maintain discipline; take preventive safety actions; rescue distressed swimmers; provide emergency first aid and CPR; perform other lifesaving services as needed.
  • Instruct swimming lessons: prepare lesson plans; register participants; take attendance; teach and demonstrate skills (floating, kicking, stroke techniques, water safety); test participants; recommend future classes; monitor safety during classes.
  • Maintain swimming pool and facility: assist in opening; clean restrooms, locker rooms, walkways, pool deck, and furniture; stock paper goods; maintain related documentation.
  • Perform customer service: provide information and answers regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees, and other issues; respond to questions and complaints; resolve problems.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Part‑Time Lifeguard:
    Age 15 or older; pass water/skills test;
    High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Part‑Time Lifeguard/Instructor:
    Age 16 or older; pass water/skills test;
    High School Diploma or GED plus one year of lifeguarding experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Part‑Time Lifeguard:
    Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid (preferred).
  • Part‑Time Lifeguard/Instructor:
    Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, CPR, First Aid (preferred).
Physical Abilities

Tasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort, involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, prolonged standing, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects of moderate weight (12–20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require perceiving and discriminating colors or shades, visual cues or signals, and oral communication.

Environmental Factors

Performance may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, electric currents, toxic agents, animal or human bites, water hazards, violence, disease, or difficult customers.
