Job OverviewThe Tax Supervisor utilizes research skills and tax knowledge to identify and communicate potential tax risks, prepare tax accrual work papers, and complete tax returns using software. The role coordinates with managers and principals, advises clients on tax implications, evaluates alternative actions to lower tax burden, and often leads complex tax issues. The Supervisor also helps grow marketing, networking, and business development and may provide written tax advice.
ResponsibilitiesControl Environment
- Apply the collective effect of various factors on establishing or enhancing effectiveness and mitigating risks of specific policies and procedures.
- Apply knowledge of transactional flow and key transactional cycles to complete audit work.
- Document, validate, and assess the design and operating effectiveness of client internal controls.
- Identify and communicate suggested improvements to client internal controls and accounting procedures to reduce risk.
- Supervise and review the work of audit staff.
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens and that firm and client teams comply with policies and quality control.
- Conduct top‑level review of T/R and resolve all tax issues with client; involve specialists where appropriate.
- Communicate with client and Assurance any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plan and review the tax process, including budgeting, staffing, and monitoring engagement process and actual time vs budget with assistance of Senior.
- Ensure timely billing, collection of A/R, and manage client relationships in accordance with project expectations.
- Provide timely advice to clients.
- Identify when research is needed; frame issues clearly and report analysis concisely.
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of Written Tax Advice (WTA) and tax returns.
- Involve firm specialists as appropriate.
- Apply firm policies regarding FAS 109, FIN 48, and ASC 740‑10 proactively.
- Explain and discuss income tax provision components and uncertain tax positions with clients.
- Communicate with Assurance on timely planning of tax accrual reviews.
- Utilize and manage specialized tax services (STS) as needed.
- Prepare provision work papers and discuss with team members.
- Identify and discuss uncertain positions with team members.
- Review and prepare footnote disclosures in compliance with 740‑10‑55.
- Assist in developing, recommending, and implementing methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing current and future taxes.
- Consider applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties per client.
- Develop and implement work plans, including organizing STS assistance on ongoing projects.
- Serve as a technical resource and ensure client service teams comply with firm policy regarding WTA.
- Provide effective assistance with exam support, frame projects for delegation, identify consulting opportunities, and support client consulting projects.
- Gather relevant information for controversy work efficiently.
- Document all significant tax positions in memoranda and ensure proper archiving to Go File Room .
- Apply governing principles to client transactions and document and communicate understanding.
- Communicate financial statement disclosure requirements to clients.
- Draft complex financial statements with disclosures if applicable.
- Recognize and apply new pronouncements to client situations.
- Identify complex accounting issues and bring them to superiors for resolution.
- Coach less experienced team members in new areas.
- Apply methodology to seek or maintain information from authoritative sources.
- Utilize internal and external research tools and select methodology for routine research requests.
