The General Laborer will act as a support person within the Self Perform Group, working directly with the Ironworkers, General Foremen, and other members of the on‑site team. They will be responsible for spotting, preventing, and putting out any potential fires as well as other assigned daily tasks.
Primary Responsibilities- Promote a strong quality culture throughout the company maintaining Cooper Steel’s core priorities:
Safety, Quality, Production - Patrol Assigned watch area for any fires or potential fires
- Have a basic understanding of safety procedures and how to implement and uphold them
- Maintain safety features, such as fire extinguishers as stated in the safety manual
- Survey the workspace for any potential risks or leaks before, during, and after the workday
- Prepare to operate fire extinguishers or other flame‑retardant equipment
- Remain vigilant on‑site whenever employees are working
- Contact and inform emergency personnel as soon as any issues arise
- Report any signs of smoke
- Make sure all equipment is in good working order
- Clean up litter or other waste when spotted in the work area
- Provide clear, agreed upon, and safe signals to equipment operators
- Coordinate pedestrians and site traffic
- Direct the movement of machines
- Communicate and give directions to operators and drivers as needed
- Other duties as assigned.
Education And/Or Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred
- Valid Driver’s License – Required
Must have clear and effective communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills: ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; good judgment; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work effectively with others. While performing certain duties of the job, the employee is required to see, talk, hear, use fingers/hands, handle/feel, and reach with arms/hands. Lifting is required up to 75 lbs.
Flexibility in hours worked and willingness to work overtime as required.
Position performs work regularly on‑site at the construction work site, which includes a variety of working conditions. These include the following conditions: noise level fluctuations from moderate to high, use of personal protective equipment, machine/equipment use, weather conditions, etc. Position involves everyday risks or exposure to elements that require safety precautions. The position will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
