Summary
Daily responsibilities consist of installing blast protection prior to surface preparation of tanks, blasting any surface to the correct degree of surface preparation. Perform repairs to hoses, lines, and isolated equipment. Must be capable of working in dark spaces with other blasters in close proximity. Additional roles and responsibility may be assigned to support efforts regarding preservation services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Accessing and working extended periods in tightly configured confined spaces, and the ability to access hard‑to‑reach areas by crawling or climbing through access holes, while utilizing tape, rubber, plastic wrap, tin, and canvas material to protect sensitive ship equipment and systems.
- Installing and removing blast protection.
- Perform routine physical work under close supervision.
- Work directly for the IMIA Blast Foreman.
- Primary job function typically requires exercising attention to detail.
- May be required to perform other production‑related tasks during downtime under adequate IMIA supervision.
- Blast surface to industry standards specified.
- Assist in setting up for the job.
- Assist in training of other workers as necessary.
- Must comply with company, federal, state, and local safety and environmental rules and regulations.
- Accurately operate, clean, and maintain all equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Ability to follow written and verbal direction.
- Must be able to work cooperatively and productively with other employees, and to carry out instructions furnished in oral, written, or diagram form.
- Must be knowledgeable of OSHA requirements relative to the shipbuilding industry.
- Regularly required to walk; frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb; required to reach with hands and arms, use hands to feel, grip, or handle; regularly required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, or more infrequently.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing or orally, efficiently and correctly interpret and work from owner's supplied drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer’s handbooks, change orders, and contract specifications.
- Must be able to access and work extended periods of time in tightly configured confined spaces and the ability to access hard to reach areas by crawling or climbing through access holes, while utilizing tape, rubber, plastic wrap, tin, and canvas material to protect sensitive ship equipment and systems.
- High school graduate, or GED preferred.
- Formal or informal on‑the‑job training and 2 years experience in the Marine Industry.
- Most work performed will be onboard a ship, in a dry dock or shipyard under fast‑paced conditions; frequently requiring overtime.
- Consistent exposure to extreme temperatures, outdoor elements, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, and dusty conditions.
- Work extended periods in tightly configured confined spaces.
- Often works on scaffolds and ladders. Safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing.
- Travel, prolonged periods of overtime and varying shifts are required in the performance of this job.
- Blast pot, hopper, forklift, dust collector, after cooler, dehumidifiers, HVAC equipment, industrial vacuum units, pressure washer, air compressors, hoses and attachments, ductwork, pneumatic tools, electric tools, electrical disconnects and transformers, hand tools, vacuum bottles, compressed air, and other tools used in the maritime blasting and coating industry.
