Assistant Teacher - IWU Location

Summary- Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional hours for staffing needs, training, and staff meetings as assigned by the director.
- Scope of position: The Assistant Teacher supports a cohesive teaching team, implements the curriculum, and manages day‑to‑day classroom operations in the absence of the Lead Teacher. The role also includes general administrative duties, monitoring children’s progress, and maintaining related records. The Assistant Teacher ensures a safe, stimulating environment that encourages active engagement and supports the school’s philosophy and educational objectives.
Specific Duties
- Have a positive attitude each day.
- Support the mission and goals of Westminster Preschool.
- Build strong relationships with children and families.
- Maintain adult supervision of children and adhere to child/staff ratios.
- Attend all required training and events.
- Demonstrate faith in action and love for children.
- Uphold Biblical values and principles.
- Maintain a clean and organized classroom.
- Assist lead teacher in keeping learning centers neat.
- Follow a daily schedule with appropriate transition times.
- Interact with children during all activities.
- Step in for lead teacher in their absence.
- Implement activities as assigned by lead teacher.
- Share housekeeping responsibilities equally with staff.
- Complete and submit the daily cleaning checklist in the lead teacher’s absence.
- Assist in implementing curriculum and lesson plans.
- Participate in mealtimes, encouraging new foods and asking open‑ended questions.
- Meet all health/safety standards per Indiana Childcare Licensing Rules and Regulations.
- Adhere to Safe Sleep guidelines.
- Observe handwashing policies and procedures.
- Practice proper diaper and sanitation procedures.
- Communicate at eye level with children during the day.
- Use problem‑solving approaches with children on conflicts.
- Update families via Pro Care regularly about their child’s activities and teacher concerns.
- Communicate with coworkers and administrative staff regarding classroom needs.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalency.
- Interest in or working toward a CDA award.
- Ability to learn and use specialized software for parent and staff communication.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.
- CPR/First Aid/Universal Precautions with annual recertification.
- Pass drug screening, criminal background check, FSSA background check, TB testing.
- Up‑to‑date physical exam.
- Complete required trainings:
Safe Sleep, Indiana Early Learning Foundations, Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Safety modules. - Maintain 20 hours of in‑service early childhood training annually.
- Attend all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
- Capable of independently caring for assigned children in required staff/student ratio.
- Familiar with Voluntary Certification Program, Registered Ministry licensing, and Paths to Quality requirements.
- Willing and able to lift a child weighing at least 40 pounds.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, reach, sit on the floor, and rise from the floor without assistance.
