Job Summary

Under the direction of the Administrator, the Information Services Attendant (ISA) provides front‑line customer service to visitors, rental clients, researchers, group tour and program organizers, suppliers, tradespeople, and others at the Varley Art Gallery. ISAs lead group tours, provide detailed information about exhibits, and connect visitors of all ages to the Gallery’s permanent collection.

Job Duties
  • Support events by setting up and taking down equipment and displays.
  • Provide exhibition information for all visitors.
  • Handle customer requests by phone, in person, or by email, offering information about the Gallery, current events, rentals, and other activities.
  • Assist patrons with registration, review program details, check system availability, issue receipts, and forward paperwork to the Contact Centre.
  • Sell and process rental and programming services, ensuring sufficient staff and facility resources. Receive payments and record sales in the Point of Sale system.
  • Maintain clean and safe conditions in the front office and reception area; report facility issues to maintenance or appropriate staff.
  • Monitor displayed artworks via CCTV and in person, alerting staff to safety or security concerns.
  • Oversee facility openings and closings, ensuring all buildings are locked, alarms set, and assets secured.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of program and promotional materials; notify staff when supplies are low.
  • Conduct facility tours and provide information on promotion packages.
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in or have partial completion of high school; post‑secondary education in art history or equivalent is an asset.
  • Experience serving customers.
  • Minimum age of 16 years at the start of employment.
  • Current certificates in Standard First Aid or Intermediate First Aid with CPR 'C' and AED.
  • Driver’s license is an asset.
  • Superior customer service and communication skills; ability to interact courteously and efficiently with a diverse patron base.
  • Ability to work with volunteers of various ages, cultures, and skill levels; computer skills are an asset.

Location

Varley Art Gallery of Markham

Work Hours

26 hours per week (Tuesday to Saturday). Occasional evening classes and events as required.
