Job Summary

Manages the Markham Museum Summer Day Camps. Oversees curriculum-based program planning, program delivery and administration for approximately 100 campers per week ranging from 4 to 16 years old, supervising up to 25 staff including supervisors, counselors, specialists and volunteers.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides daily direction and support to camp supervisors and staff.
  • Plans and schedules staff resources, routines and procedures to ensure successful program delivery.
  • Oversees daily activities, ensuring programming is effective and adapted to camper needs.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates STEAM, history and environment-based educational day camp programs.
  • Prioritizes child well‑being, safety and protection throughout the camp.
  • Acts as a leader role model, fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Serves as an ambassador for the City of Markham, liaising with camp supervisors and resolving issues with support of the Museum Program Coordinator.
  • Provides regular updates and feedback to the Museum Program Coordinator.
  • Plans and implements camp staff training and leads camp preparations and regular meetings.
  • Provides ongoing training, coaching and recognition to staff and volunteers, conducting formal performance assessments.
  • Assists with recruitment, screening and evaluation of camp staff and volunteers.
  • Ensures coordination with all Museum divisions to secure necessary knowledge and artifacts.
  • Completes parent camp evaluations and staff evaluations of camp.
  • Controls supplies and equipment inventory, ensuring orders are received in accordance with City policies.
  • Oversees camp purchases and budget in accordance with City policies and budget.
  • Reports incidents promptly to the Museum Program Coordinator using incident/accident report forms.
  • Maintains camp documentation, including registration information, attendance records and timesheets.
  • Completes a full report on the camp session at conclusion of the summer.
  • Communicates effectively to all stakeholders including parents, campers and staff.
  • Attends special events as required and oversees attendance and sign‑in procedures.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in or graduate of a post‑secondary institution in Recreation, Museum Studies, education or related field.
  • Past camp experience with senior supervisory capacity managing staff and/or volunteers.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ required.
  • High‑Five Healthy Child Development required.
  • Must provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Extensive knowledge of program planning and child development stages.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and carrying out daily and special programs.
  • Knowledge of museum themes including History, Environment, Science and Tech.
  • Knowledge of STEAM programming.
  • General interest in the Museum field with demonstrated creativity and innovation in program planning skills.
  • High‑Five Quest 2 is an asset.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or Behaviour Management is an asset.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Acrobat);
    Xplor experience is an asset.
