Health, Safety & Environment; HSE Advisor
Overview
Reporting to the Manager HSE, the Health Safety & Environment (HSE) Advisor will work alongside the national health and safety team and local operations. The HSE Advisor will emphasize firsthand engagement and direct involvement with field operations to ensure risks are managed effectively and control measures are practical and implementable in the construction environment. This position will provide support to our operations in the Greater Toronto Area and is primarily field‑based with travel expectations.
Responsibilities- Conduct site‑specific risk assessments on construction and infrastructure sites.
- Observe real‑time operations to identify hazards and assess risks for high‑risk tasks such as excavation, scaffolding, crane operations, trenching, paving, and confined spaces.
- Conduct ongoing site observations to identify new or emerging hazards.
- Recommend updates to risk assessments and control measures based on field conditions.
- Serve as the primary health and safety representative on site, monitoring high‑risk activities and ensuring proper implementation of safety measures.
- Address unsafe practices immediately to maintain compliance with safety protocols.
- Provide hazard mitigation recommendations, including engineering controls, administrative actions, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Facilitate toolbox talks and on‑the‑spot safety briefings.
- Engage with field workers, contractors, and supervisors to promote safety awareness.
- Act as a liaison between field operations and management.
- Support emergency response efforts and ensure availability of first aid and firefighting equipment.
- Assist in testing and improving site‑specific emergency plans.
- Work with supervisors and operations teams to integrate safety controls into daily workflows and propose alternative strategies or adjustments based on field conditions.
- Post‑secondary education (degree or diploma) in Health and Safety or equivalent education.
- 5+ years of Health and Safety experience in construction or industrial settings.
- CRSP, CRST or other professionally recognized safety certifications are considered an asset; CM IOSH Certification is required.
- COR/ISO Auditor training is preferred.
- Comprehensive/working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and industry safety standards.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Evenings and weekends may be required.
- Bilingual in French and English (oral and verbal) is considered an asset.
- Base salary: $65,000 – $85,000 per year (dependent on skills, experience, qualifications, and location).
