Your Opportunity

An opportunity exists within Stantec’s Community Development Team for a Water Resources Coop for the May – December (8 month) term as a Surface Water Resources Coop. The position will be based out of the Markham, Mississauga, or Toronto office, but may require multiday travel to other Stantec offices and sites throughout the GTA (and possibly beyond). You will report directly to a Project Manager or Team Lead and will have a mix of field and design responsibilities.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Undertaking modeling and design tasks associated with stormwater management works (including low impact development (LID) design), subwatershed studies, floodplain delineation / management analyses, erosion control studies, and stream restoration projects;

  • Coordinating with engineers, technical staff and or team members to ensure that the projects needs are met in a timely and effective manner;

  • Researching issues related to surface water resources that impact individual projects;

  • Writing reports and design briefs to document field assignments and desktop analyses;

  • Taking responsibility for the quality of your written, technical and graphic work and for completing work in time and on budget; and

  • Completing field assignments including the monitoring of surface water systems and features (i.e. LIDs, stormwater ponds, etc.), culvert inspections, infiltration testing, etc. This work may be completed within the GTA or in support of works for other offices.

  • Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others both verbally and in written documentation such as emails, memos and technical reports;

  • Willing to work and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought;

  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks;

  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.);

  • Ability to interpret sketches. drawings, standards, and other similar material including an understanding of the interplay between design, permitting and construction is considered an asset;

  • Working knowledge of Ontario’s stormwater guidelines and regulations and familiarity with the land development/redevelopment process with an understanding of water resources, environmental and/or civil engineering concepts is considered an asset;;

  • Hands on experience with stormwater management modelling, ideally Visual OTTHYMO, HEC-RAS, and/or PCSWMM, and with design software such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD (Civil3D) is considered an asset; and

  • All applicants must have a valid G driver’s license. A vehicle to complete the required field assignments (mileage reimbursement will be provided) or ability .

  • Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in a related Engineering program.
