Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Geotechnical Engineering Co-op Student / Intern 4-18 Month Term

Learning begins in the classroom, but there is no better place to gain real‑world experience than with Stantec. Co‑op students and interns are integral members of our teams, helping solve complex engineering challenges while developing practical technical and professional skills.

The Stantec Internship Program provides students with valuable hands‑on experience by working alongside experienced engineers, geoscientists, and technical specialists on projects in the mining, water‑retaining infrastructure, and natural resource sectors. Through active involvement in project‑related tasks and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, interns gain practical exposure to engineering consulting, develop technical and professional skills, and learn how academic concepts are applied in real‑world projects.

The program also offers opportunities to build industry relationships, gain insight into project delivery and business operations, and develop a strong foundation for future career opportunities within Stantec.

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Energy and Resources team delivers geotechnical solutions for mining, tailings, waste rock, dams, water storage, water conveyance, and hydropower projects. Our work supports projects from early site characterization and planning through analysis, design, construction, operation, and closure.

We have an exciting opportunity for a 2027 Geotechnical Engineering Co‑op Student to join us for a term length that is flexible from 4 months to 19 month term commencing Summer 2027.

Your

Key Responsibilities
  • Support engineers and geoscientists with mining geotechnical work for tailings storage facility, waste rock structure, open pit and other mining infrastructure.
  • Assist with geotechnical calculations and analyses, which may include seepage, slope stability, settlement, liquefaction, deformation analysis, earthworks quantities, and material‑property assessments under the guidance of experienced practitioners.
  • Support to develop borehole and test pit logs, in‑situ test results, laboratory data, instrumentation records, drawings, and other field documentation.
  • Assist with geotechnical material characterization and the selection of parameters for engineering design and analysis.
  • Support field investigations, construction observations, quality‑assurance activities, and site documentation, as project needs require.
  • Contribute to calculation packages, geotechnical data reports, design reports, technical memoranda, specifications, drawings, proposals, schedules, cost estimates, and progress updates.
  • Use engineering and productivity software such as Microsoft Word and Excel, Geo Studio, AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS, and other analysis or data‑management tools.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary team members and communicate clearly regarding assigned tasks, results, uncertainties, and required follow‑up actions.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong interest in geotechnical engineering and in mining, tailings, dams, water‑retaining structures, or related natural‑resource projects.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to ask questions, follow direction, and document work carefully.
  • Organized and able to manage priorities, complete assigned tasks, and communicate progress or challenges.
  • Commitment to health, safety, quality, and responsible engineering practice.
  • A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites when required.
Education and Experience
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited civil, geological, mining, or related engineering program.
  • Completion of at least two years of undergraduate study is required; completion of additional geotechnical, soil mechanics, geology, or engineering‑design coursework is considered an asset.
