Job Description & How to Apply Below

Markham Outer Southwest, Canada | Posted on 08/06/2026

For over 20 years, Omnify Lighting has been a leading North American manufacturer of architectural back lighting systems, home to our patented Lumi Sheet™ light guide panel technology. We build custom lighting solutions for some of the world's top retail, hospitality, and architectural brands, and we run on a high-performance, team-based culture where craftsmanship and safety go hand in hand.

About the Role

We're looking for a skilled Crate Builder to join our packaging team. Your primary responsibility is building custom wood crates to protect our products in transit. Measuring, cutting, and assembling to spec, using power saws, pneumatic tools, and hand tools. When crate-building volume is lighter, you'll flex into general packaging work alongside the rest of the team to keep production moving.

This role works with power tools daily, so safety isn't a checkbox here, it's the standard everything else is built on. We always expect strict adherence to safety procedures and PPE requirements, and we're looking for someone who treats that as a given, not a suggestion. If your background is primarily packaging rather than carpentry, that's fine, we'll train you on the tools;

what matters most is that you take safety seriously from day one.

What You'll Own

Crate construction:
Measure the product being shipped and cut wood and other materials to build a crate sized specifically to fit it, this isn't blueprint-driven, so you'll need to size and plan each crate based on the actual dimensions of what's inside; assemble crate components using saws, drills, nail guns, pneumatic staplers, and other power tools; securely fasten crate parts with appropriate hardware.

Product handling & packaging:
Load and position products inside crates with proper cushioning and support; secure items using foam, bubble wrap, or bracing as needed; label crates with accurate shipping information.

Quality control:
Inspect finished crates for structural integrity, accuracy, and damage before final packaging; catch and report material or construction defects; make adjustments or repairs to maintain crate quality.

Packaging team support:
When crate-building demand is lower, work alongside the packaging team on general packaging and shipment-prep tasks to help the team hit production and shipping deadlines.

Safety & compliance:
Follow all safety procedures related to power and pneumatic tools and material handling; wear required PPE at all times; adhere to company standards for crate construction and packaging materials; help spot and flag unsafe conditions before they become incidents.

What You Bring
  • 2+ years of prior experience in packaging and/or carpentry, ideally in a furniture or product-based manufacturing environment (prior hands-on experience with power saws or pneumatic tools is a plus but not required, as long as you're comfortable learning them under proper safety training)
  • Comfort and confidence working with power saws, pneumatic tools (nail guns, staplers), and hand tools, or a clear willingness and aptitude to be trained on them safely if you're coming from a packaging-only background
  • Ability to measure products accurately and translate those measurements into a properly sized, well-built crate, without relying on a blueprint or pre-set spec
  • Physical capability to lift and move heavy items using proper lifting technique
  • High attention to detail; precision matters for both structural integrity and product protection
  • Ability to work as part of a team to hit shared production and shipping deadlines
  • Comfort identifying and troubleshooting issues that come up mid-build, rather than waiting to be told what to do
Nice to Have
  • JHSC (Joint Health and Safety Committee) certification or training
  • Experience building custom crates for fragile, high-value, or irregularly shaped products

What We Offer:

  • A challenging and rewarding role in a dynamic and growing company.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • A supportive team environment and a culture of innovation.
  • Competitive salary based on experience and benefits package.
