Registered Practical Nurse; Part Time Mixed Shift
Position Overview
Perform the functions of a Registered Practical Nurse in compliance with the standards of practice for Registered Practical Nurse developed by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Provide high‑quality nursing service that reflects the organization’s resident‑centred approach, vision and policies. As a Unit Nurse, supervise staff day‑to‑day in the unit and coordinate resident care with interdisciplinary team members and families.
Qualifications- Registered Practical Nurse with current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Experience in nursing (asset)
- Current CPR Certificate
- Good leadership skills
- Demonstrated initiative, problem‑solving and judgement skills
- Superb customer‑service skills
- Computer literacy
- Valid Police Vulnerable Sector Screen
- Ability to communicate in Chinese (asset)
- Successful applicants must provide a recent satisfactory vulnerable sector police reference check and medical clearance certificate.
- Consult with the Team Lead regarding resident condition changes, adverse events, and other necessary matters.
- Effectively implement the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation.
- Monitor and adhere to legislation, standards, policies, and procedures of the long‑term care home.
- Maintain regular and effective communication with family members for timely updates and support.
- Maintain close working relationships with attending physicians, laboratories, agencies, hospitals, and other disciplines to ensure timely and appropriate delivery of services to residents.
- Initiate contact with appropriate team members as required by the resident’s condition to improve resident functioning.
- Plan and direct the work of Personal Support Workers assigned to the unit.
- Assist in new staff orientation and in‑service education.
- Provide ongoing feedback/coaching to Personal Support Workers, monitor performance, and ensure compliance to policies and standards.
- Report performance issues, incidents, and problems to the Assistant/Director of Resident Care in a timely manner.
- Provide input in the performance evaluation of Personal Support Workers as required.
- Ensure adequate nursing supplies and equipment on the unit and place orders as necessary.
- Keep up‑to‑date records and control of medication; properly dispose of discontinued or expired medications.
- Implement risk management and quality improvement programs, including infection control, occupational health and safety, incidents and falls, and perform audits as assigned.
- Provide timely and professional intervention to resident care issues.
- Monitor the safety and security of the facility and assume the duty of fire marshal in case of fire or disaster.
- Participate in nursing‑related committees as appropriate.
- Coordinate and chair interdisciplinary care conferences for residents.
- Provide updates on resident conditions during doctors’ rounds.
- Assume the role of Unit Nurse for the floor during the shift.
- Supervise activities of students, as assigned, in accordance with the College of Nursing of Ontario’s Accountability Standards for Nurses working with students.
- Provide job shadowing or mentorship to members of the health care team, as assigned.
- Keep up‑to‑date with developments and best practices in the field.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Considerable standing, walking, lifting and bending.
- Exposure to all resident care elements through regular resident contact.
- Permanent mixed shift work including days, evenings, nights and weekends, with short shifts in accordance with scheduling practices.
- Scheduled working hours may vary based on operational needs.
$28.95 – $32.06 per hour.
