Clinical Practice Leader - Inpatient Surgery

Role overview

The Practice Based Educator plays a pivotal role in the healthcare team, bridging the gap between clinical expertise and education. This role ensures clinicians are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality patient care and enables nurses to work to the fullest scope of practice by advancing standards of care and fostering required competence and professional practice.

• Provide curriculum development, classroom instruction, clinical training, and assessment to support nursing education and patient care.
• Mentor staff and stay updated on healthcare advancements; collaborate with institutions and engage in research to enhance nursing education and patient outcomes.
• Promote a positive and safe environment for staff and patients; deliver clear, constructive feedback to support ongoing staff development.
• Foster a culture of speaking up for safety, identify and nurture talent, and exercise positive leadership to influence the interprofessional team.
• Support organizational initiatives through corporate education and training in addition to role-specific education within the Inpatient Surgery unit.

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in good standing
• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
• Masters degree in nursing with education focus (required or in progress)
• Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in surgical inpatient units
• Experience teaching and training adults and employing adult learning principles (preferred)
• BLS instructor with Heart and Stroke (preferred)
• Membership with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
• Excellent leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and motivate
• Expertise in formal and informal education/coaching, curriculum development, classroom instruction, clinical training, assessment and evaluation
• Strong interpersonal and interprofessional collaborative practice, communication, and organizational skills
• Proven abilities in complex analysis, critical thinking and problem solving
• Ongoing professional development and computer proficiency (MS Office; Meditech EMR)
• Demonstrated good attendance and performance records
• Commitment to a safe environment for staff, patients and families in alignment with Occupational Health & Safety Act
