Job Description Court Registry Officer, Nelson District Court

Are you ready to make a real difference in your community? We have an exciting opportunity for you to join the team at the Nelson High Court & District Court as a Court Registry Officer.

In this role, you'll be part of a close-knit, supportive team dedicated to the smooth and successful operation of the Court. Every day brings new challenges and the chance to work with a diverse range of people—including defendants, witnesses, families, Oranga Tamariki, lawyers, and police officers. You'll play a key part in ensuring justice is delivered efficiently and respectfully.

Your Primary Responsibilities Will Include
  • Court Taking – You will help facilitate the smooth operation of the Court, including introducing Judges (in English and Te Reo Māori), working closely with them in the Courtroom and Chambers, managing jurors, and general administration of the Court.
  • Customer Service – All courts have an onsite customer service area or hub that customers can access for any court-related matter. You will work to answer customer queries via face-to-face, phone, or email interactions.
  • Case Management – This involves ensuring files are accurate and up to date. This part of the role involves a large component of data entry.

This is a role where your organisational skills, adaptability, and commitment to service will truly shine. You'll have the opportunity to develop your skills, contribute to a vital public service, and be part of a team that values your growth and wellbeing.

There are multiple positions available - 2 x permanent and 1x fixed term. Please indicate in your cover letter which you would prefer.

Ō Pūkenga/Skills And Experience

You will be able to demonstrate strong customer service skills, quality decision-making, be solutions-focused and have the personal confidence and resilience to adapt to a dynamic work environment. You will be able to communicate confidently with Judges within the courtroom and their chambers, as well as other members of the judiciary.

To Be Successful, You Will Need To Be
  • Highly organised – you will demonstrate the ability to manage and re-prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Flexible and adaptable – you will be able to respond quickly as new matters arise.
  • Detail-orientated and observant – the court has many different processes, and case information needs to be accurate.
  • Able to multi-task – manage conflicting priorities and move from one task to another quickly.
  • Willing to learn – legislation and court processes are always changing, and you can adapt and maintain knowledge capital.
  • Resilient – as a Court Registry Officer, you might work on sensitive cases, sometimes at high volume.

Even if your experience looks a little different from what we have outlined and believe you can bring value to the role, we'd love to hear from you!
