Direct message the job poster from Candela Medical
General SummaryThe Research Scientist/Engineer will contribute to the development of next-generation laser and other energy-based devices for dermatological and aesthetic applications. This role supports the research activities—from early concept development and feasibility studies to functional research prototype design and testing. Responsibilities include design, construction, and evaluation of benchtop test systems and research prototypes, including solid-state and dye lasers, as well as other energy-delivery platforms.
The role will also collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to address technical challenges, evaluate system performance, and advance device concepts. The ideal candidate is highly hands‑on, brings strong experimental and design skills, and thrives in a dynamic, collaborative research environment.
- Design, build, and test complex optical, laser, mechanical, and electronic subassemblies.
- Develop and characterize key optical/laser or RF components.
- Assemble and test research prototypes, including optical alignment, thermal management, electronics drivers, troubleshooting, and performance evaluation.
- Perform theoretical and/or computational analysis to assess new concepts.
- Evaluate and improve existing system components, processes, and performance.
- Prepare documentation for internal R&D use and support design transfer activities to product development.
- Participate in project planning, design reviews, and data reviews.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while effectively managing time and priorities.
- Support cross‑functional teams with troubleshooting, testing, and system evaluation as needed.
- Communicate progress, challenges, and recommendations to project leads and management.
- Travel occasionally to support prototype testing or field evaluations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Optical, Laser, or Electrical engineering (or related field); advanced degree preferred.
- 2+ years of direct experience working with laser or other energy‑based technologies; experience with tissue optics and laser‑tissue interactions is a plus.
- Broad understanding of laser systems and other energy‑delivery platforms.
- Hands‑on experience with laser design, optical alignment techniques, and/or RF systems.
- Practical laboratory skills, including experience with oscilloscopes, spectrometers, beam profilers, power supplies, and related equipment.
- Experience with modeling or design software (e.g., MATLAB, COMSOL, Zemax, Solid Works, LabVIEW); hands‑on proficiency preferred.
- Knowledge of system control, cooling systems, and instrumentation is beneficial.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work proactively and independently.
- Experience in medical device development is preferred but not required.
