The Merchant’s House Trust seeks a new Chair of Trustees to lead our Board and support the future of this beautifully restored 17th century historic house museum. .
Preserving history, building community.
Based in Marlborough, the Trust operates a small, respected heritage site with professional staff, volunteer support, and strong local connections. We’re looking for a strategic, collaborative leader with governance experience, heritage interest, and the ability to act as an ambassador.
This is a visible, hands-on voluntary role ideal for someone with a commitment to cultural and community life. Local ties are welcome but not essential.

Historic House Volunteer We are looking to recruit Historic House Volunteers, able to give their time for three or six hour shifts Tuesday – Saturday. You can volunteer once a week, fortnight or month.Historic House Volunteers are vital in bringing The Merchant’s House to life, ensuring as many people as possible are able to visit this magnificent building. Welcoming our visitors and sharing their knowledge of The Merchant’s House, the Bayly family and the history of the house and Marlborough in the 17 th century in a fascinating and enjoyable way will provide our visitors with the best experience possible.
With training, Historic House Volunteers help to care for and catalogue our extensive collection, over 3,000 objects, paintings and items of furniture.
This role will suit individuals who enjoy making visitors happy, who have an enthusiastic and friendly manner, who have an interest in local history and enjoy meeting new people.

Events Support Volunteer We are looking to recruit Event Support Volunteers, able to give their time for three or six hour shifts Monday-Friday with occasional evening and weekend volunteering opportunities. You can volunteer once a week, fortnight or month.Fundraising provides vital income to The Merchant’s House, and Event Support Volunteers will help to ensuring our events run smoothly and raise as much funds as possible. Event Support Volunteers will be front of house at events, working with the Fundraising & Events Coordinator to create exciting new events each year and preparing for them. This could be administrative and marketing in the run up, and then helping to set out events or even decorate the historic house for Christmas!
This role will suit individuals who enjoy making visitors happy, planning and organising, who have an enthusiastic and friendly manner, with an interest in local history and enjoy meeting new people.
