Metro West Medical Center is the largest community health care system between Worcester and Boston. The 307-bed regional system includes Framingham Union Hospital, Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, and the Metro West Wellness Center. Onboarding requires background check and pre-employment health screening which includes a drug screen.

General Summary: Under the direction of the director, assumes a leadership role in the overall functioning of the unit. An experienced Registered Nurse who, in addition to providing direct patient care, is accountable for facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, patient flow, staffing, resource utilization and problem solving. Assists the director in monitoring and evaluating staff performance based on established standards of care.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Excellence:
    Assist staff in applying the nursing process in the management of patients with complex needs. Demonstrate accountability for patient care delivery and promote accountability among all staff. Provide expert nursing care to a select group of patients and act as a resource to nursing staff and students. Support and participate in collaborative rounding within an interdisciplinary framework of care. Identify educational needs of the unit staff and work with the Professional Practice Department.

    Respond to changes in the internal and external environment that impact patient care. Participate in annual competency development. Update nursing policies to reflect current practice.
  • Patient and Family Centered Care:
    Demonstrate the principles of exceptional patient experience, including patient-centered care, safety, effectiveness, timeliness, equity, collaboration, and partnership with patients and families. Anticipate and solve patient clinical and customer service needs while addressing long term solutions. Facilitate communication and collaboration with co-workers, other disciplines, and other departments to identify customer service needs. Ensure staff acknowledge patients, address concerns, and promote service recovery.

    Conduct medical record reviews and patient care rounds to ensure population-specific care is delivered.
  • Finance:
    Provide and monitor staffing based on the established budget. Coordinate unit-based staffing on a shift basis to achieve high quality and cost-effective care. Demonstrate a patient-first, cost-effective approach to care in terms of equipment, staff, supplies, and other resources. Anticipate staffing needs for subsequent shifts and arrange coverage as needed.
  • Human Resources:
    Coordinate care on the unit to achieve high quality and cost-effective care. Provide ongoing feedback to leadership and contribute to annual performance evaluations of nursing staff. Hold staff accountable to practice according to established standards.
  • Safety and Regulatory:
    In collaboration with Security, assure safety and security of staff, patients, and others. Assist in unit implementation of No Pass Zone, LEAN initiatives, and other process improvements. Monitor clinical practice and address safety regarding nursing, environment, and equipment. Participate in environment of care rounding and Tracers. Be familiar with service line metrics/dashboards to provide safe and appropriate care. Conduct random audits on new nursing workflows, documentation, and programs.

    Hold staff accountable for reporting unsafe practices through established channels.
  • Leadership / Professional Development:
    Champion new initiatives and participate in unit/departmental or hospital-wide committees. Support professional growth and development of staff and participate in Shared Governance. Engage with the Preceptor Program and orientee/preceptor conferences. Address educational needs and communicate with the Professional Practice Department. Maintain personal professional growth and demonstrate effective two-way communication with staff.
Qualifications
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • PACU experience required.
  • Associates Degree in Nursing; BSN preferred.
