Director of Transportation

Position

Description:

Reporting to the Executive Director of Transportation in the Operations Unit, the Director of Transportation supports the

Executive Director in supervising all student transportation in the Jefferson Parish Public School System (JPPSS). The Director of Transportation is responsible for ensuring that students travel safely and efficiently to and from school and school-related activities. The Director of Transportation executes and coordinates the Scheduling and Route Coordination teams of the Transportation Department.

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Works closely with the Executive Director and Transportation Department to drive the mission, vision, and a set of measurable objectives for the Transportation Department.
  • Holds the Transportation Department teams accountable for meeting their objectives and conducts formal performance evaluations in accordance with the JPPSS evaluation schedule for central office employees as well as support staff.
  • Ensures that the Transportation Department is in compliance with federal statutes and regulations, state laws, Board of Elementary and Secondary Education rules and regulations, JPPSS policies and procedures, and relevant contractual obligations.
  • Assists in the development of an efficient, cost-effective transportation schedule that brings students to and from their destinations in a timely and safe manner.
  • Executes transportation plans for emergency situations.
  • Resolves transportation-related incidents and complaints
  • Ensures accurate and timely communication regarding transportation news and incidents to the Executive Director of Transportation and other stakeholders as necessary.
  • Ensures that all student transport vehicles are inspected on schedule, receive maintenance as needed, and meet safety standards.
  • Assists the Executive Director by evaluating and establishing policies and practices to ensure the safety of students and transportation personnel.
  • Ensures that all students who require auxiliary assistance in transport receive necessary services.
  • Coordinates professional development seminars for Transportation Department staff.
  • Develops and executes a recruitment and retention plan to hire qualified personnel to meet the vast needs of the Transportation Department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Transportation.

Skills and

Qualifications:

We seek detail-oriented, independent self-starters who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to raising student achievement and who have a record of high performance in challenging situations. Successful candidates will also demonstrate:

  • 3+ years of progressively increasing experience school transportation services.
  • Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture creator that can inspire and motivate.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
  • Collaborative management style, with a proven track record of working with diverse individuals at all levels to drive decision-making and results.
  • High degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
  • Experience in utilizing database management programs designated by the JPPSS.
  • Transportation safety and training experience.

Desirable

Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with district and school-level operations
  • Bachelor's Degree

Physical Involvement:

Must be able to operate office equipment. Standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting up to 10 pounds is required.
