Examples of work for this vacancy Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance
  • Perform all activities required for roadside maintenance
  • Perform all roadway surface maintenance activities
  • Service and make minor repairs to operating equipment
  • Provide traffic control
  • Perform basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Snow and Ice
  • Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
  • Prepares and inspects winter equipment
  • Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup
  • Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals
  • Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
  • Performs traffic control set‑ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles
Minimum Qualifications

Valid Class B Driver’s License and no air brake restriction. Must obtain a Tanker Endorsement prior to hire. Must obtain a Class A License within 6 months of hire.

Must obtain a Non‑Commercial pesticide sprayer license within 6 months of hire.

Exam Part 1

Experience:

One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).

OR

Education:

Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience.

Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Exam Part 2

Applicants that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. (Acceptance of the offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If you’ve previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work nights; may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both hot and cold) on an intermittent basis.
