Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration serves as the chief financial and human resources officer for the School of Public Policy. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the effective, efficient, and responsive functioning of the financial, human resource, and administrative aspects of the School to allow it to advance its teaching, research, and impact mission. The Assistant Dean works in consultation with the Dean and other leadership to develop and realize the School’s short‑ and long‑term objectives, leads the financial and budgetary management needs of the School, and ensures compliance with University policies, University System policies, and State and Federal regulations, serving as a key advisor to the dean and a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team.
Preferences- Master of Business Administration degree and/or a CPA certificate
- Recent experience as an Assistant Dean and/or an academic department Director of Finance and Administration
- Familiarity with the University of Maryland, College Park, or similar business systems (such as Workday, KFS, PHR, BPM, BA4, SIS)
- Ten years of progressively responsible financial, managerial, and administrative experience;
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; federal regulations relevant to sponsored research accounting and reporting;
- Demonstrated skill in problem solving and preparation of data‑driven analyses and reports;
- Demonstrated ability utilizing IT tools and software systems to provide meaningful financial management information and analyses and to assure effective, efficient processing of business transactions;
- Demonstrated ability for forming positive working relationships with others at many levels within and across a complex organization, including the ability to identify and to gain consensus on issues of common interest;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Ability to lead and work within a team‑oriented environment; extensive and demonstrated effectiveness in supervision and mentoring of direct reports.
Ability to lift/carry 25 lbs and navigate the campus.

Minimum QualificationsEducation:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Experience:
Twelve (12) years of professional experience in financial planning, budget management, or academic administrative operations. Six (6) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff.
- Knowledge of organizational and unit performance measures.
- Knowledge of the impact and implications of decisions on leadership objectives.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in data analytics and negotiation.
- Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.
- Ability to research information and analyze complex data and information to create reports and presentations.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.
- Ability to develop and administer new policies and procedures.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
