Under the direction of the Group Fitness Coordinator and in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Marshall Area YMCA, a Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for developing and teaching group exercise classes and required to stay current on all certifications necessary for the programs/classes being taught.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Group Exercise Instructor should be friendly, outgoing, and have a clear understanding of the YMCA’s mission statement.
  • A Group Exercise Instructor must be certified in the classes they instruct. If the candidate is not currently certified, they will work with the Group Fitness Coordinator to become certified.
  • The position requires CPR/First Aid certification (which can be obtained through the YMCA), various computer trainings, along with any other schedule staff meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Develops meaningful relationships with members, Fitness Center visitors, YMCA staff, and others.
  • Assist in maintaining all Group Exercise fitness equipment.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the Fitness Center/Aerobic Studio and work with the Building and Grounds Director to maintain all equipment in proper working order.
  • Model, teach, and incorporate the YMCA’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Interact with members/guests in a positive manner at all times.
  • Develop and administer group exercise classes according to class objectives and YMCA principles.
  • Complete all required employment paperwork including time records in an honest and timely manner.
  • Help to maintain the Marshall Area YMCA’s reputation in the community as an organization dedicated to building character.
  • Complete new employee orientation and any other required trainings (ie Child Abuse) within the first 60 days of employment and attend additional department meetings as scheduled.
  • Know, understand, and follow all facility guidelines, policies, and chain of command of the YMCA.
  • Be responsible for completing and turning in accident/incident reports IMMEDIATELY after occurrence.
  • Assist other staff with the room transition between classes.
  • Notify the Fitness Coordinator, building supervisor, or other staff member whenever a potentially serious problem arises with equipment or facility.
  • Set up an account and actively use Motion Vibe to track class attendance and/or message your class rosters.
  • Be responsible for finding a qualified substitute for any absence and notify the Group Fitness Coordinator of the substitution.
  • Teach every class scheduled through the entire session.
  • Prepare a workout based on the needs and the ability of participants, and provide a variety of options to tailor your class to ability levels. Learn required memorized material if scheduled and certified for Les Mills classes.
  • Arrive in the room at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the first class and have all necessary equipment ready before class.
  • Start and end classes on time.
  • Strive to learn the participant’s names as well as teaching them yours.
  • Be responsible for safety of the participants and never leave a class unsupervised.
  • Be responsible for putting own equipment away.
  • Have fun teaching your class.
  • Assist the Group Fitness coordinator and YMCA staff team as necessary to ensure successful outcome of YMCA operations and mission.
  • The incumbent must be able to fulfill the above job requirements by purposefully and seamlessly challenging her/himself and others to accept and demonstrate the positive values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
  • A free or discounted membership is given to all instructors who maintain a one class per week average. If you are not able to maintain one class a week, an instructor can be on sub-status, but will not receive a free or discounted membership.
    • To remain active as sub-status, subs must teach a minimum of 1 class per month. At the end of 30 days, if an instructor has not taught a class, they will receive an email from the Senior Program Director notifying them that they are being deactivated in our payroll system. Re-activation is easy to do if it falls within a 6-month time period.

      If the lapse is more than 6-months, we are required to re-do a background check.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • A Group Exercise Instructor must be able to lead group classes which include all the major components of transitioning, queuing, timing, and being physically fit for the class.
  • Abilityto demonstrate and use a variety of fitness equipment (i.e. bands, free weights etc.) as needed for the format they are certified to teach.
    ** If teaching Les Mills formats, ALL choreography must be memorized. Choreography booklets are not allowed when teaching a class. Choreography is not allowed to be altered in any way.
