Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III – Marshall, TX
Apply for the Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III role with the Texas Department of Transportation. This position involves routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor equipment maintenance; traffic control; and assisting the public during emergency situations.
Essential Duties- Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; perform basic welding as needed; use and move equipment, tools, materials, and products related to these activities.
- Provide support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assist stranded motorists as required.
- Assist with traffic control by placing and gathering cones, warning signs, barricades, and flagging traffic.
- Determine placement of traffic control devices and install or move devices.
- Inspect barricades for compliance with barricade standards.
- Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
- Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights‑of‑way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
- Collect litter and roadway debris.
- Mow rights‑of‑way and picnic and rest areas; perform plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
- Operate light equipment such as a front‑end loader‑one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, minor repairs on equipment, and complete required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
- Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, help the public, and perform other work during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Inspect maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Serve as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
- Inspect traffic control devices at construction project sites for compliance with specifications, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Maintain construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; process related paperwork; review files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
- Perform skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operate heavy equipment such as a front‑end loader‑one and a half cubic yard or more, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
- Identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; perform welding; use and move equipment, tools, materials, and products.
- Inspect maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at points of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.
- Work on a survey crew; operate survey instruments such as theodolite, transit and level, electronic distance meter, and total survey station.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
