Trans-Equip Tech Operator
Job DescriptionTransformer/Equipment Technician Operator. Under the supervision of a Transformer/Equipment Technician Foreman and General Foremen, the position is responsible for completing in-field jobs on an assigned or emergency basis, including maintenance, installation, and removal of high voltage transformers and associated equipment, troubleshooting electrical power equipment and control circuits, switching, maintenance, and construction of substation equipment. The role ensures a safe work environment for employees and contractors while leading apprentices.
EssentialFunctions & Responsibilities
- Safety and environmental knowledge.
- Obtain and maintain security access from customer and work unescorted on customer-related properties, substation, and ROWs.
- Meet residency requirement of 30 miles driving distance or less from the city listed on the job posting.
- Verbal communication effectively and accurately.
- Availability during off‑duty hours, call outs, and overtime as directed.
- Proficient computer skills/familiar with Microsoft Office suite.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Work within all applicable safety rules.
- Work both independently and in group settings.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- At least 18 years old.
- Willingness to work extended hours and travel as required.
- Availability during off‑duty hours, call outs, and overtime.
- Ability to work in energized substations and power plants up to 345,000 volts.
- Ability to work with hands above head for extended periods.
- Long hours and overtime during holidays, emergencies, weekends, etc. (subject to call‑out work).
- Read and understand drawings, schematics, operating instructions, and manuals relating to station transmission equipment.
- Meet residency requirement within 30 miles of the city listed.
- Familiar and able to use Microsoft.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Minimum of a recognized Certificate of Accreditation from an approved College or University, or equivalent job experience.
- College transcripts required to verify coursework. If not met, completion of required courses may be required.
- Management reserves the right to determine degree equivalency.
- Experience as a substation operator, journeyperson substation electrician is required (not required for apprentices).
- Upon offer, employees may be required to complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen, background check, and/or MVR check.
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) class "A" required within 6 months of employment.
- RARE (up to 10%): climbing poles, climbing stairs.
- OCCASIONAL (up to 33%): sitting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, body twisting, crawling, climbing on/off truck, lifting over 10 lbs. to 50 lbs., climbing ladders, balancing, lifting up to 50 lbs.
- FREQUENT (up to 66%): standing, walking, reading, reaching, range of motion, depth perception, color vision, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 10 lbs.
- CONTINUOUS (up to 100%): sense of touch, manual dexterity, speaking clearly, seeing distant, seeing, hearing‑speech range.
Due to the inherently dangerous nature of the industry, employees must possess sufficient eyesight, maintain attention, withstand weather, wear protective equipment, and communicate effectively. Employees work alone in energized high‑voltage substations up to 345,000 volts and in proximity to energized electrical equipment. They may be exposed to static, induced voltages, electric and magnetic fields, radio frequencies, hazardous equipment, high intensity situations, varying temperatures, traffic, uneven terrain, insects, or confined spaces.
