Position Summary

As a Field Service Technician – Network you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases, including key systems, PBX, Centerx, and other business systems. You will work with splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities, installing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable. You will provide customer‑facing support and proactively sell TDS services and products.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repair, and maintenance of telephone equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers.
  • Identify locations of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, or customer cable.
  • Locate and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
  • Keep orderly logs of all locate requests in the exchange area and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
  • Provide troubleshooting support and respond to dispatches.
  • Assist with record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
  • Deliver excellent customer service and proactively educate customers and sell TDS products and services.
  • Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices for splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities.
Required Qualifications
  • 1+ year basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
  • 6+ months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, or switch training.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to follow TDS attendance guidelines and meet business and customer needs.
Other Qualifications
  • Must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, including background checks.
  • Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities, occasional travel, and overtime as needed.
  • Successful completion of all Safety Course curriculum components and maintenance of DOT requirements for operating vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
  • Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of telecommunication products and services (inside wiring, internet, bonding, grounding, structured wiring, video/CATV/DBS, etc.).
  • Proficiency with computer applications (databases, planning and dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Office).
  • Independent decision‑making with little or no supervision.
  • Demonstrated customer service and sales skills, effective verbal and written communication.
  • Organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
  • Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Performing the duties of this job requires frequent sitting, standing, writing, and computer operation. You will communicate with customers, move about, reach for items, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, balance, and climb. You may lift 50–100 lbs. Visual acuity requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Work may be outdoors or in mechanical rooms with potential for extreme weather, moving mechanical parts, and heavy equipment.
