Conducts trade‑specific inspections on elevators, escalators, mechanized walkways, and other lift machinery to verify that operation, construction, retrofit, or repair work complies with applicable code requirements, drawings, plans, specifications, and contract documents.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Performs trade‑specific code and/or quality control inspections on various phases/aspects of elevator/lift.
- Detects possible defects and faults in equipment installations, maintenance, or operation and recommends remedial measures per jurisdictional requirements.
- Accurately reads, interprets, and comprehends equipment operation and installation plans and instructions.
- Utilizes standard testing devices and methods to ensure equipment operation meets established requirements.
- Consistently applies code requirements and related standards in accordance with state, local, and national regulations and department policies.
- Coordinates work schedules with elevator service companies/technicians to ensure maximum operational efficiency.
- Works cooperatively with property managers, service companies, and the general public.
- Conducts all operations in accordance with established safety practices, ensuring hazard‑free completion.
- Education & Experience: Possession of current QEI (Qualified Elevator Inspector) certification; four (4) years of experience in the elevator industry performing inspections, service, repairs, and testing. Engineering discipline education may substitute for two years of field experience.
- Demonstrated Knowledge: Methods and practices of installing, repairing, and maintaining electric and hydraulic elevators, escalators, and moving walkways; fundamental mechanical and electrical principles; construction stages for defect detection; application of the American National Standard Safety Code; ability to use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, and layout documents.
- Strong comprehension of written materials, code documents, and the ability to make inferences.
Typical worker spends most time in an industrial field environment with daily exposure to operating machinery; office time limited.
CompensationNon‑Production hourly rate: $30–$32. Production percentage: 40 % for test witnessing. Pay may vary based on experience and market location.
