Overview

Anthropology Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)

Diablo Valley College (DVC) seeks a tenure-track Anthropology Assistant Professor to start in Fall 2026. The College is committed to social and racial justice and to equitable student success for a diverse student body.

Position Summary

The successful applicant will demonstrate discipline expertise and sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of community college students, and will teach introductory courses in Anthropology (including Archaeology, Cultural Anthropology) and lecture and laboratory courses in Biological Anthropology. The position supports teaching in multiple modalities and active engagement in shared governance.

Responsibilities
  • Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction aligned with established course outlines.
  • Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) for courses and programs; develop and implement SLO assessment processes.
  • Collaborate in curriculum development, program review, and department improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in department, division, and college committees; participate in professional development activities.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject area and effective teaching strategies; uphold professional conduct and ethics.
  • Inform students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, attendance requirements; prepare and grade assignments and exams; communicate academic progress.
  • Maintain attendance, scholastic and personnel records; post and conduct regular office hours per policy.
  • Participate in the College’s shared governance processes.
  • Demonstrate understanding and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of students and staff.
Qualifications

Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff, and faculty. The following qualifications (earned degrees from an accredited college/university) are required:

  • Master’s in anthropology or archaeology, OR
  • Bachelor’s in anthropology or archaeology AND a Master’s in sociology, biological sciences, forensic sciences, genetics or paleontology, OR
  • Alternate path via equivalency petition if exact degree titles are not held (equivalency form downloadable from the application).

Note:

A Doctoral degree (PhD) is considered to encompass a master’s degree (MA or MS).

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Experience teaching college-level anthropology courses and commitment to equity and innovative pedagogy.
  • Ability to teach across modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, online) and develop culturally responsive curricula.
  • Commitment to shared governance and service beyond the classroom.
  • Experience with underprepared students in reading and writing.
  • Master’s or PhD in anthropology or archaeology.
What We Offer

Initial salary placement for full-time, tenure-track positions ranges from $68,136 to $112,848 per year (up to $132k), depending on degree and experience. Benefits include STRS membership, health, dental, vision, retirement options, and additional district-wide benefits. New hires may have union-related information available as applicable.
