The Martinez Police Department is currently recruiting candidates currently attending or accepted to the Police Academy, who are interested in becoming a Police Officer. Applicants placed on the list can be hired as trainees while still in the academy or as a police officer upon graduation at the discretion of the City.
The members of the Martinez Police Department are dedicated to providing the highest quality police services. The Department has a staff of 53 FTE’s, (37 sworn and 16 FTE professional staff), with an annual operating budget of $16.6 million.
The Martinez Police Department offers a full slate of policing services to the community, including officers dedicated to investigations, traffic enforcement, tactical unit, canine (K-9) units, homeless outreach, crisis intervention, and community engagement/social media. Active reserve officer and cadet programs supplement the Department and further strengthen community involvement. The Department operates its own communications center, providing 24/7 emergency and non-emergency dispatch services for the Martinez Police Department and other agencies.
The Department assigns its officers in Neighborhood Policing Areas to further engage the community.
Under general supervision, to patrol an assigned beat in the enforcement of law and order; to carry out special assignments in the protection of life and property; and to do related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES- Operates an automobile, motorcycle, or walks in patrolling an assigned area for crime prevention and law enforcement
- Responds to radio messages or telephone instructions and arrives at scenes of disorder or crime
- Notes and reports traffic hazards
- Investigates and prepares reports on accidents, offenses, and property damage
- Gives directions and information
- Makes arrests
- Issues citations
- Gives verbal warnings
- Prepares reports on arrests and impounded property
- Directs traffic and checks doors to determine whether buildings are locked
- Inspects establishments that provide alcoholic beverages and entertainment
- Intervenes in private or public disputes to protect the public and maintain order
- Requests medical attention when necessary
- Appears in court as the arresting officer
- Transports prisoners
- Investigates complaints
- Interrogates persons whose actions are suspicious
- Reports malfunctioning street lamps
- Ensures objects on streets that could endanger traffic are removed
- Reports abandoned or damaged vehicles
- Serves subpoenas
- Provides escort or guard services for parades or public meetings
- Participates in training conferences and programs
- Practices the use of firearms
- Observes and reports conditions conducive to crime
- Watches likely locations for wanted persons
- Writes case reports and logs of activities
- Occasionally relieves a superior officer and acts for him
- Supervises the custody of prisoners
- Fingerprints, photographs, and books prisoners
- Takes prisoners to court
- Answers inquiries
- Keeps records and prepares reports
- When assigned, operates a motorcycle in traffic enforcement
- Minimum age of 21 on or before the date of appointment (unless appointed under section 830.1(c) of the Penal Code—Gov. Code section 1031.4)
- High school diploma or G.E.D. certificate
- Valid California driver’s license with a good driving record
- Pass a medical examination and a psychological and background investigation
- 20/100 vision or better, correctable to 20/30 in each eye
- Ability to pass a polygraph examination
- Observe and learn various laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, and first aid
- Analyze problems and situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action even in emergency or stressful situations
- Undergo strenuous physical conditioning
- Maintain positive business and community relationships
- Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws, regulations, and police literature, with an aptitude for law enforcement work
