Job Overview
Contra Costa County Health Services Department is recruiting permanent full‑time Medical Interpreter vacancies in the Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN) located in Martinez, California. Currently we seek bilingual candidates for Lao, Mien, Spanish and ASL interpreter positions.
Under general direction, incumbents provide medical interpretation in target languages or American Sign Language (ASL) for patients and family members in face‑to‑face, telephone or video encounters with medical providers and support personnel. Interpreters support Contra Costa Health Services clients, including those at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, its Health Centers, Appointment Unit and Financial Counseling, as well as clients of other hospitals, medical centers, clinics on the HCIN network and related national networks.
Future vacancies for additional languages may become available. Bilingual candidates fluent in other language(s) are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities- Orally interpret information related to medical procedures, diagnostics, medical education and instructions between patients, clients, medical providers and clinical staff in the target language and English
- Clarify meaning and verify patient’s understanding of medical information
- Provide education, support and clarification to providers and staff on culturally specific values and practices as they relate to the health care encounter
- Verify the accuracy of medical and technical terms and terminology
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and client information according to established departmental guidelines
- Participate in training and continuing education to facilitate professional development
- Assist others in using the HCIN system
- Provide and promote excellent customer service for all internal and external customers
Experience: Six (6) months of full‑time or equivalent professional experience working as a Medical Interpreter.
Education: Completion of an approved Medical Interpreter training program.
Other RequirementsIncumbents will be required to pass the Language Line Interpreter Skills Test and complete 40 hours of HCIN approved medical interpreter training within nine months of appointment.
A background investigation/fingerprint and/or physical exam may be required prior to the start of employment.
