Sheriff’s Ranger

Three vacancies have opened within the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff for the Sheriff’s Ranger position. Assignments will be made between Court Security Services and the Health Services Security Unit based on operational needs.

Rangers assigned to Court Security Services monitor secured public entrances at the county’s seven courthouses. Rangers assigned to the Health Services Security Unit assist deputies at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez and at satellite clinics by screening bags, property, and individuals for weapons and contraband.

• Monitors x‑ray screening equipment at secured facility entrances.
• Assists sworn staff with security‑related needs.
• Ensures weapons and contraband are not brought into secured areas.
• Maintains logs and records related to screening operations.
• Provides directions and general information to the public.
• Prepares routine paperwork and reports.

• Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (out‑of‑state license accepted during the application process).
• High school diploma, GED, or high‑school proficiency certificate.
• Minimum six (6) months of full‑time or equivalent experience in a position involving substantial public contact or security‑related services.
• At least 18 years of age at the time of application.
• Successful completion of a thorough background investigation conducted by the Office of the Sheriff.

• Experience performing security or access‑control duties in a court, hospital, or other secure public facility.
• Experience screening individuals or property for safety, security, or access‑control purposes.
• Experience preparing basic logs, reports, or documentation using computer systems.
• Experience communicating effectively in a second language in a public‑facing setting.
• Experience independently responding to security incidents and coordinating with sworn law‑enforcement personnel.
