Duties
You will serve as a Command Assistant and be responsible for providing executive‑level administrative services for the Commanding Officer and Deputy Director of the National Maritime Center, as well as general support to the NMC Command staff.
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
- Manages appointments and schedules for senior leadership to ensure efficient time allocation
- Ensures commitments made during meetings are followed through by keeping the supervisor informed of their progress
- Manages correspondence and routine email for leadership to ensure actions are completed
- Drafts basic correspondence and documents using templates and established guidelines for leadership signature
- Prepares travel orders, itineraries, and agendas for official travel in accordance with applicable instructions
- Maintains front office procedures such as VIP visit protocols

Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be registered or exempt from the Selective Service.
- A one‑year probationary period may be required.
- Under the Civil Service Reform Act, first‑time supervisors and/or managers will serve a one‑year probationary period.
- All selected applicants must undergo and successfully pass a background investigation; this position does not require a security clearance.
- This is not a bargaining unit position.
- Time‑in‑Grade requirement must be met by the closing date of the vacancy.

To qualify at the GS‑08 grade level, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑07 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience includes performing the tasks below on a regular basis:
- Prepares travel orders
- Maintains and organizes office files and other materials
- Screens all calls and visitors
- Maintains property accountability and conducts property audits
- Maintains time and attendance and schedules meetings/conferences
