Position: *Industrial Mechanic Apprentice

What You'll Do
  • Answer and make emergency calls to perform repairs on equipment
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and behaviors; regularly inspect for, report, and correct unsafe or hazardous conditions; actively participate in the site Safety Program
  • Demonstrate skills and processes as training progresses, working independently or in a team to undertake tasks while increasing overall contribution
  • Work safely to prevent on-the-job injuries by following safety rules and wearing required PPE
  • Maintain communication with coworkers through two-way radio and hand signals
  • Keep work areas and equipment clean and orderly
  • Observe, learn and understand a wide range of skills and processes under the instruction of skilled personnel
  • Operate mobile equipment to lift and transport materials, including loaders, cranes, manlifts and forklift
  • Read and interpret condition reports or repair orders, communicate for clarification, and discuss preventative techniques to minimize future repairs
  • Test, troubleshoot, and repair equipment to maximize safe and productive operations
  • Understand all safety and environmental compliance standards, regulations and policies
  • Use a wide array of hand and power tools, precision measuring instruments, and test equipment
What You'll Need
  • Basic personal computer and corporate standard software skills (MS Word, Excel)
  • Apprentices may be placed on a 12-hour shift rotation (days and nights) depending on business needs or personal interest
  • Exposure to heat, dust, fumes and mists, uneven surfaces, loud noise, heights, confined spaces, poor lighting, materials and by-products associated with steel manufacturing
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge/experience in a Computerized Maintenance Management System is a plus
  • Self-starter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team with minimal supervision
  • Committed to learning the trade and willing to invest time to gain experience
  • Proficient in at least one of the basic crafts: electrician, millwright, fabricator, welder, or vehicle mechanic
  • Ability to manage time, meet hard deadlines
  • Normal work hours are days, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required to meet project deadlines or peak workload
  • Ability to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding to access elevations; able to crouch for periods; push, pull, lift and turn while carrying tools, materials and equipment
Your Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
