Job Title: Second Class Line Technician

Department: Electric

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Grade: 11

Salary: DOQ (Minimum $44,301.79)

Nature of Work

This is semiskilled and skilled work assisting a first-class line technician in the performance of overhead and underground line work and general outside wiring. Work also involves performing work independently, if qualified, as assigned by a first-class line technician or supervisor. Work is performed under the supervision of a technical superior who reviews work in progress or upon completion for quality and operating results.

Examples

of Work
  • Assists first-class line technician as directed; works lines from bucket truck and poles.
  • Pulls and strings wires; climbs poles and pulls and ties wires; hangs transformers and makes proper connections.
  • Pulls wire for house served and connects house circuits to hot wires; assists in maintaining lines, poles and transformers as required.
  • Replaces, hangs, repairs, and cleans streetlights.
  • Ensures line and bucket trucks and other equipment are properly serviced and maintained. Keeps all trucks stocked with materials and necessary tools.
  • Serves as relief operator at generating plant; trims and cuts trees; hauls and sets poles.
  • Assists in the installation of all types of underground and fiber-optic systems installations and maintenance activities.
  • Performs traffic control functions and related work as required.
  • Attends electrical training classes or other seminars as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Meets all requirements of and has experience as a service technician in working with equipment, materials and tools used in electrical ground operations; high school diploma or G.E.D., and equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
  • Knowledge of the approved methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical line installation and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions of the work.
  • Knowledge of first aid including artificial respiration.
  • Ability and willingness to climb poles and to work among high tension wires, exercising proper safety precaution and in accordance with safety rules, practices and OHSA regulations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to learn the work of a first-class line technician.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.
  • Ability and willingness to be on call duty at any time.

The employee is regularly required to lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, color and peripheral vision.

The employee is regularly required to work in wet, humid, and outdoor conditions where there is a risk of electrical shock; frequently required to work in extreme cold and hot weather near moving mechanical parts;

regularly required to work near energized equipment; occasionally work in high, precarious places near vibration where fumes or airborne particles are present. Exposure to loud and occasional exposure to very loud noise exists.

Special Requirements
  • Must have a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License or must obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Must be able to report to work site within 30 minutes for after-hours emergency call-back situations.
  • Must become certified in first aid and artificial respiration, and obtain VDOT flagger’s certification within 90 days of hire date.
