Immediate Supervisor:
Transportation Supervisor
Perform intermediate semiskilled human support work in transportation of pupils to and from school and special events; related work as required. Work is under supervision of the director of transportation and appropriate principals.
Work involves up to 50 pounds force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and light force constantly. Requires climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, repetitive motions; vocal communication for conveying instructions; hearing; visual acuity for operation of vehicles; exposure to environmental conditions, noise, vibration, atmospheric conditions; may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and require PPE.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks- Driving school bus; picking up and delivering students.
- Pre‑trip inspection of bus; reporting deficiencies; washing and cleaning inside/outside.
- Fueling bus as required.
- Obey all traffic laws and mandatory safety regulations.
- Transport authorized students, personnel, chaperones on special trips; report accidents and complete required reports.
- Conduct periodic emergency evacuation drills.
- Transport students to special events and field trips.
- Record mileage; maintain records and prepare reports.
- Ensure passenger safety; maintain discipline; make reports as necessary.
- Make bus available for scheduled maintenance or repairs.
- Perform related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of problems involved in operating a school bus; knowledge of county geography and street locations; skill in safe operation of a school bus; ability to detect malfunctioning equipment; ability to assist children with patience and understanding; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school officials, public, associates, and students.
Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation.
Special RequirementsPossession of or ability to acquire a valid commercial driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must pass physical examination as prescribed by the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must maintain a satisfactory driving record from the Division of Motor Vehicles that meets state requirements and indicates positive driving points.
