TITLE:
Special Education Interpreter and Translator
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma and experience with community organizations or agencies that serve the needs of youth. Fluent in Spanish and English verbal and written.
REPORTS TO:
Director of Special Education
JOB GOAL:
Parents will have access to a translator and interpreter to support our Spanish speaking families in the community. This will allow families to access resources that may not otherwise have been possible. Additionally, this position will help special education staff to involve these families in services under the infants and toddlers program and IEP and/or special education meetings and to translate written documents as needed.
Responsibilities
- Provide interpreting and translating services in the educational environment.
- Work with Family Support Center, Infants and Toddlers, and Special Education staff to engage parents/guardians.
- Increase family involvement in all activities.
- Work collaboratively with all special education staff to support students and families.
- Under the direction of the Family Resource Center parent coordinator and special education staff, help plan family workshops and activities to support students academically and children in their natural environments.
- When requested by the administration attend meetings for the purpose of interpreting.
- Support Family Resource Center staff in surveying families and when needed, conduct home visits to identified families to determine how to best support them.
- When directed, participate in on‑going professional development by attending workshops, lectures, and institutes on specific subjects to enhance job performance and knowledge of subject matter.
- Work cooperatively with students, school staff, and community partners to serve the needs of KCPS students and Kent County families.
- Interpretation during playgroups, family engagement events, IEP meetings, SECAC meetings, public awareness events, with Infants and Toddlers home visits, and outreach with families will be required.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment:
Part‑Time Grant Funded position. Duration of employment is contingent on grant funding.
Salary Lane:
Part‑time/ $30 per hour/ under 25 hours per week.
FLSA Status:
Non‑Exempt
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
