As assigned by the Program Coordinator Program or classroom location may change to meet the needs of the program.

Position Summary

Under direction of the school principal and Head Start Coordinator plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. To ensure student success, provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals. Supervises students in a variety of school‑related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.

Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

Reports To

School Principal and Head Start Coordinator

Education, Certification and Experience
  • A Maryland Professional Eligibility Certificate, Standard Professional Certificate or Advanced Professional Certificate in the appropriate field of education; or
  • A Maryland Conditional Degree Certificate as outlined in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) or
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE); or
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to ECE, with experience teaching preschool‑age children; or
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to students, teachers, staff, central office personnel, and community members
  • Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.

Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities, and Duties
  • Creates a classroom environment that makes space for student voice, student agency, and is intellectually and socially safe for learning.
  • Develops classroom routines and rituals to support a culture of learning and utilizes a balance of proactive evidence based strategies to manage conflict and redirect negative behavior.
  • Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Plans and prepares lessons individually and collaboratively aligned with Calvert County curricula that outlines clear learning goals, assignments, and instructional materials.
  • Perform the functions of this position with a strong understanding of the Head Start Performance Standards and the component plans; and thorough knowledge and application of Developmentally Appropriate Practices;
  • Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including weekly observations in each area, examples of the child's work, and a developmental assessment, completed as per designated procedure;
  • Incorporate research‑based strategies, evidence‑based practices, and instructional technology within the learning process.
  • Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials aligned to Calvert County curricula that meets the needs of every student regardless of their background, ability, or social‑economic status.
  • Organizes and leads activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Monitors and evaluates student progress and outcomes using feedback and appropriate formative and summative assessment techniques.
  • Prepares, administers, and corrects evaluations and assessments, and records results.
