Position: Lower and Middle School Counselor for the 2026-27 School Year
Location: Crownsville

Indian Creek School is an independent, co‑ed day school in which 587 students aged 3 to Grade 12 partner with innovative teachers in an outstanding educational program. Located on a beautiful, 114‑acre campus in Crownsville, Maryland (just north of Annapolis), ICS students are nurtured and known as individuals while being challenged to discover their passions, purpose, and potential. This is a full‑time (40 hours), 10‑month position with occasional summer responsibilities, reporting to the Lower School and Middle Principal.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the emotional well‑being of students in grades Pre‑K - 8, meeting individually and in small groups with students, as well as occasionally with Upper School students in the absence of that division’s respective counselors.
  • Observe students in the classroom and provide advice, support, and guidance to teachers and divisional faculty on best supporting students in their classroom settings.
  • Maintain records of all counseling sessions and family communication.
  • Work with classroom teachers to develop students’ social skills and peer relationships; develop and support behavioral plans for individual students.
  • Help students develop social and emotional skills to succeed both personally and academically.
  • Provide advice and helpful resources to students and families regarding emotional and behavioral concerns.
  • Refer students to school and outside resources/professionals, including nursing staff, academic support, college counseling, and advisors, when the situation is outside of the realm of counseling or beyond the counselor’s scope of training.
  • Meet regularly and work collaboratively with the division principals, the Health and Well‑Being teams, learning specialists, and other members of the student support teams on issues related to the mental health of the community.
  • Serve as a member of our Diversity Equity and Inclusion Team.
  • Teach classes in Lower School regarding Social Emotional Learning topics such as peer relationships, coping and soothing strategies, and problem‑solving skills, to name a few.
  • Teach Human Development Class in the Middle School.
  • Lead occasional parent education workshops on issues related to social‑emotional learning.
  • Attend weekly Lower School and Middle School faculty meetings.
  • Attend Middle School overnight field trips.
  • Cover duties such as carline and lunch and recess as assigned by the Lower School and Middle School Principals.
Qualifications
  • Desire to be actively engaged in the work of innovative teaching, diversity and inclusion, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree (Master’s preferred).

  • Collaborative by nature, and an effective communicator with students, teachers, administrators, and families.
  • Proficiency in technology.
  • Federal and State Background Check clearance and MSDE Employment History review.

Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's years of experience at an educational institution and prior administrative experience and responsibilities. Candidates will be offered a competitive salary and are exempt from overtime within the range of $56,900- $98,520, depending on experience.
