Position: 2026 PhD Graduate - Physicist/Mathematician/Engineer- Senior Navigation Analysts
Location: Laurel

Are you interested in applying your skills to solve unique navigation challenges facing the US Navy?

Do you want to be part of a team of engineers, applied mathematicians and physicists as we ensure the US Navy has the most accurate, yet reliable maritime navigation systems in the world?

If you are graduating with a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Statistics or Engineering and want to work in the field of navigation, we'd love to have you join our team!

We are the Navigation team in the Force Projection Sector at JHU/APL. We are seeking creative engineers, scientists, and mathematicians to help us pursue innovative solutions to the timely and timeless maritime navigation challenges facing our nation. Our navigation expertise is applied to a variety of platforms with missions critical to national security. For example, one of our key contributions is to provide crucial insight into the navigation performance of the Navy's submarine force - a platform that must continuously maintain a highly accurate and reliable navigation solution with limited external aids.

Our team applies skills such as physics-based error modeling, parameter estimation, system testing & analysis, operator training, optimal navigation sensor integration, and alternative navigation techniques.

As a member of our team, you will...

  • Become a Subject Matter Expert on the mathematical theory and physics behind cutting‑edge navigation systems that must operate in extremely demanding conditions in support of the most crucial missions of the US military.
  • Apply this knowledge to model the errors in various navigation systems and be part of a team determining their impact on tactical and strategic mission objectives as we also investigate methods to mitigate their influence.
  • Assess the fidelity of the navigation systems being studied and communicate conclusions/recommendations to decision‑makers.
  • Join a highly talented and motivated team of mathematicians, engineers and physicists focused on navigation analysis with many opportunities to collaborate with other innovative experts from a variety of technical fields.
Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Engineering or similar technical field.
  • Are an expert in developing and using mathematical or physics based models describing a complex system.
  • Have excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills necessary for documenting and presenting work to APL colleagues and government sponsors.
  • Are willing and able to travel occasionally to US Navy facilities, bases and contractor sites to present results.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have experience modeling navigation sensors including IMUs, GPS, and navigational sonars.
  • Have experience with a high‑level programming language like MATLAB or Python.
  • Have an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.
