the Position
The Special Assistant to the Fire Chief provides direct administrative, technical, and project-level support to the Fire Chief and senior public safety officials. This position plays a vital role in managing special projects within the Office of the Fire Chief, supporting high-level decision‑making, strategic initiatives, and departmental operations. The ideal candidate will have experience working with fire officials or public safety leadership and demonstrate the ability to handle sensitive assignments with professionalism, discretion, and independence.
Work is performed under general supervision, with performance evaluated based on overall impact on managerial improvement and operational efficiency within the department.
The mission of the Prince George’s County Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department is to serve our communities with excellence by providing the highest quality of risk reduction, fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical, and all-hazards response services to enhance the quality of life in Prince George’s County.
Examples of Work- Advises the Fire Chief on departmental strategy, resource allocation, and operational priorities to support agency goals.
- Assists in identifying short‑and long‑term objectives aligned with the mission of the department.
- Provides input on the development and evaluation of programs, initiatives, and departmental performance metrics.
- Analyzes the effectiveness of personnel deployment and equipment utilization across divisions to ensure optimal support of emergency services.
- Conducts research on emerging trends, policy updates, and operational best practices to recommend improvements in organizational structure and efficiency.
- Prepares reports, briefings, and strategic recommendations based on data analysis and field assessments.
- Supports the planning and execution of special projects, departmental reviews, and internal audits.
- Collaborates with command staff and other city/county agencies to align efforts and ensure interdepartmental coordination.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University in Liberal Arts, one of the Social Sciences, or Public or Business Administration; or field closely related to assignment/functional area.
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in government or business.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
- Prior experience supporting Fire Officials and/or Public Safety Officials.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Research methods and report preparation and presentation.
- Performing investigations and providing investigatory reports.
- Prepare comprehensive narrative reports.
- Previous investigations experience in public safety.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
