General Summary
Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact the security and safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors. Mentors and trains security staff, assumes charge roles as needed, and may work flexible scheduling or “off‑shifts” in a 24/7 environment. May obtain and maintain a State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out crime control and response duties as an Unarmed Security Officer assigned to the hospital.
PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
- Contributes to the achievement of department goals and objectives and adheres to policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Immediately responds to emergencies to provide assistance to employees and customers.
- Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed; may patrol the campus via motor vehicle or bicycle.
- Monitors the security and appearance of lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams as appropriate; serves on committees and represents the department and hospital/facility in community outreach efforts.
- Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations, and activities; maintains department records, reports, and files as required.
- Utilizes non‑violent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to keep staff, patients, visitors, and others safe, calm, and respected on site.
- Provides assistance with way‑finding, parking, deliveries, and other requested information for the hospital and Med Star affiliates.
- Responds to security and medical code calls, investigates incidents and accidents, gathers information and evidence, notifies appropriate authorities or superiors, and calls for backup assistance as necessary.
- Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
- Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
- Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required; observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons that might require police action; controls access to and inspects packages leaving buildings; reports all safety, security, and law violations.
- Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
- Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems as directed.
- Responds to circumstances where law enforcement authority may be required.
- Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
- Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with staff and the public.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associate’s degree preferred
Experience
- 1‑2 years of related security or law enforcement experience required
- 1‑2 years of Med Star service in lieu of security experience required
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid State Driver’s License in good standing required
- MD Special Police Commission preferred; or DC Special Police Officer preferred
- Must maintain ongoing training to keep SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC
- IAHSS certification as a security officer preferred
- CPR (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from AHA or American Red Cross within 90 days required
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit
- Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation, and crisis prevention intervention
Salary range: USD $18.70 – $32.72 per hour.
