About the JobEnsures a safe environment for our patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions that may impact the security and safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors. Mentors and trains security staff. Assumes charge role as needed. Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work "off-shifts."
May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response.
- Assists supervisor with daily supervision of the shift, monitoring communication center, and ensuring duties are performed correctly.
- Acts as a resource or mentor to security staff.
- Conducts in‑service training.
- Assumes charge role as needed.
- Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
- Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility; may patrol the hospital campus via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
- Observes and monitors conditions, objects, or persons that might require police action; controls access and inspects packages; reports violations.
- Responds to emergencies and security and medical code calls.
- Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems.
- Participates in investigations; maintains records and prepares incident reports.
- Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
- Utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques; assists with restraining as needed.
- Testifies at legal proceedings, hearings, and trials.
- When exercising law enforcement authority, secures the scene, preserves evidence, detains and secures suspected criminal perpetrators, and assists responding law enforcement.
- Works cross‑functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
- Assists in developing department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; ensures compliance.
- Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts; communicates with security staff and the public.
- High School Diploma or GED required;
Associate's degree preferred. - 1–2 years of satisfactory performance as a Security Officer I and SPO commissioned required, or 5–7 years total related security or law enforcement experience required.
- Valid State Driver’s License in good standing required.
- MD Special Police Commission (MDSPC) preferred or DC Special Police Officer (SPO) preferred.
- If Special Police Officer, must satisfy ongoing training requirements.
- IAHSS Certification as a Security Officer preferred.
- CPR (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers required within 90 days.
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
- Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation, and crisis prevention intervention.
