The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a software engineering team, which includes career and talent development, tactical planning, capacity and demand management and project delivery. The manager works in concert with the Portfolio team to define priorities and deliverables by clearly communicating areas of risk, dependencies, and mitigations to both technical and non‑technical audiences. They also work directly with architecture and quality assurance to define and implement benchmarks for product quality and interaction between interconnected systems.
By building relationships across the organization, they navigate complex issues and work across teams to align implementation schedules and remove blockers.
The Home First technology team supports Clayton’s Insurance business directly to our end customers and through integrations with our Retail, Vanderbilt and 21st Mortgage business partners. Our business provides homeowners, auto, pet and various other insurance products. Our business teams handle everything from the initial policy sale to Servicing, Claims and Accounting. The technology team provides direct support, products, services and integrations that enable the business to function using a .Net
and AWS tech stack. We are integral to the success not only of our direct business team, but also our technology and business partners around Clayton.
- Serve as a coach and mentor for the engineering team and scrum team at large
- Develop engineering skillsets of the team in preparation for the needs 2+ years into the future
- Work with team leadership to establish annual KPIs
- Actively work to remove blockers to sprint and project success
- Establish an environment that focuses on rapid delivery, high quality and low technical debt through self‑directed teams
- Foster a culture of innovation that challenges the team, creates space for conversation and aligns ideas and decisions to our goals
- Partner with architects to understand system design constraints, functional and non‑functional requirements
- Provide guidance that focuses on common solutions which are reusable, fault tolerant and enable rapid delivery
- Participate in budgeting activities around team member resources, contractors, projected software renewals and costs associated with software development
- Establish clear goals that can be used as an anchor point for decisions and conversations
- Work to establish a common understanding between stakeholder groups and tech partners that eliminates ambiguity
- 3+ Years of Existing Leadership Experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, related field, or equivalent work experience
- Understanding of AWS, the service it provides and cost management
- AWS certification preferred, but not required
- Broad understanding of technology stacks, architectural practices and communication patterns
- Can recognize dependencies across teams, work to minimize the impacts and inform delivery schedules
- Understands how to utilize EDA and Microservices to create low dependency interconnected systems
- Can respectfully challenge ideas, estimates and processes to align around common goals
- Thought leadership that drives innovation
