Position Purpose
The ED Patient Care Specialist provides care to patients in the ED under—that of the registered nurse. This care focuses primarily on personal hygiene, nutritional needs, and activities
168 of daily living. The ED Specialist performs receptionist, secretarial, housekeeping, restocking duties and serves as a communication liaison in the department. With excellent customer service skills, the ED Patient Care Specialist performs sterile and non‑sterile specimen collection (phlebotomy and straight catheterization) upon completion outages of skill competency validation in accordance with Mercy One North Iowa policy and procedure guidelines.
- Assists with patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, spiritual, social and education needs and supports the patient's plan of care throughout patient's stay.
- Effectively communicates pertinent patient changes/conditions to the Registered Nurse and multidisciplinary team to achieve desired patient outcomes, and documents in the electronic/paper medical record in an accurate/timely manner.
- Provides for patient comfort, safety, and protects dignity, privacy, and confidentiality.
- Communicates with internal/external customers/colleagues in a courteous, positive, empathic and professional manner, and accepts assignments willingly.
- Attends and participates in departmental/organizational meetings, in‑services and educational opportunities. Department meeting attendance requirement: 80% with 50% in person if department meetings are available by webinar.
- Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies in department. Supports staffing needs for patient care in multiple units, as needed, while being flexible with schedule and hours.
- Adapts positively to the ever‑changing health care environment by supporting technology and process changes. Willing to learn new things, is open to change and maintain a calm, positive manner under stressful conditions.
- Part Time: 5:00 PM – 11:30 PM, rotating M‑T‑W of week 1 then W‑Th‑ifiés of week
2. Work every other holiday.
High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
AND one of the following:
Successful completion of formal Nurse Aid course/training verified through transcript or original program certificate of complete, required.
OR
Currently enrolled in an A.D.N., B.S.N., program with successful completion of first semester of A.D.N. program; OR first year completion of nursing courses in BSN; OR
Graduate of an A.D.N., Diploma, BSN; MA, Surgical Tech or LPN program; OR EMS, or EMT.
OR
Registered on State of Iowa Nurse Aide registry listing as “Active” or eligible, preferred.
OR
Hired into Mercy One North Iowa TNAP program.
Experience- sidewalks>nursing Assistant experience preferred
- Basic computer skill required.
- Previous blood drawing is preferred.
- Medical terminology training or proficiency preferred.
- Ability to prioritize multiple orders or requests in a rapid and accurate manner in order to provide timely service to all patients.
- Must have excellent customer service skills.
- Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other hospital personnel and patients.
- Must be able to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
- Understands that errors may have serious consequences for patients.
- Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.
