SummaryTransportation Security Officers are responsible for providing security and protection of travelers across all transportation sectors in a courteous and professional manner. Their duties may also extend to securing high‑profile events, important figures and/or anything that includes or impacts our transportation systems.
Duties- Operate various screening equipment and technology to identify dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and on passengers, and prevent those objects from being transported onto aircraft.
- Perform searches and screening, which may include physical interaction with passengers (e.g., pat‑downs, search of property, etc.), conducting bag searches and lifting/carrying bags, bins, and property weighing up to 50lb.
- Control terminal entry and exit points.
- Interact with the public, giving directions and responding to inquiries.
- Maintain focus and awareness while working in a stressful environment that includes noise, crowds and time pressure, in order to identify and locate potentially life‑threatening or mass‑destruction devices.
- Engage in critical thinking and apply risk‑based screening protocols as required by the program.
- Retain and implement knowledge of all applicable Standard Operating Procedures and adapt to new information or unexpected obstacles.
The salary range for Mason City, IA (MCW – Mason City Municipal Airport) is $40,332 to $56,282, or $19.33 to $26.97 per hour, and includes locality pay of 17.06 %.
At this time, this airport is only seeking qualified female candidates to meet mission‑related staffing needs. Male applications will be accepted but not considered until staffing needs change.
Physical Demands- Maintain physical agility to squat and bend.
- Lift and manipulate baggage weighing approximately 50 lb and other objects subject to security processing.
- Walk up to three (3) miles during a shift and stand for prolonged periods (up to 4 hours).
- U.S. citizenship or U.S. nationality.
- Minimum age 18 at time of application.
- Selective Service registration required.
- Pass a structured interview, drug screening, medical evaluation and background investigation.
- Subject to post‑employment random drug and/or alcohol testing.
- Available to work various shifts and overtime as needed.
- Proficient in English.
- Mandatory travel for training and occasional travel may be required.
- Exposure to potentially lethal devices and dangerous chemicals is inherent.
- Experience:
At least one year of full‑time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening or as an X‑ray technician. - Education:
High‑school diploma, GED, HiSET, TASC or equivalent. One of the following is required:
Experience or Education.
- Occasional travel: a minimum of three (3) weeks in full‑time duty status, may vary up to six (6) weeks.
- Selective Service registration required for male applicants born after 12/31/59.
- Credit check: no delinquent federal or state taxes; no past‑due child support.
- Residency:
Reside in the United States for three of the last five years; special exemptions apply under specific conditions.
- Full‑time: 40 hours per week; shift work any day from Sunday through Saturday, including irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended shifts, weekend and split shifts.
- Part‑time: 16–32 hours per week; similar shift conditions.
Obligations to maintain certification, fitness for duty, background checks and drug screening will be applied. TSA policy prohibits relocation or pre‑employment travel expense reimbursement. TSA is an excepted service agency; employees may be eligible for cross‑agency opportunities under interchange agreements.
