Position Summary:
A physician assistant employed by Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is expected to assist in medical and surgical care of patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The PA will report directly to an attending physician and participate in all aspects of patient care as indicated, performing duties described below.
Position Responsibilities/Standards Outpatient Clinics- Attend outpatient clinics and participate in the initial evaluation as well as longitudinal care of patients.
- Obtain detailed medical history and perform comprehensive physical examination.
- Order and review appropriate diagnostic testing, including radiographs, CT, MRI, EMG, DEXA, and others.
- Conduct procedures under supervision of the attending physician.
- Develop and implement plans of care with attending supervision.
- Document all evaluations, care and services rendered in a timely manner.
- Make appropriate referrals for consultations when indicated.
- Provide pre‑ and post‑operative patient education to patients and families.
- Respond to telephone inquiries and provide appropriate medical care or referrals.
- Communicate with referring physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapy staff regarding patient care.
- Provide follow‑up and health‑maintenance care, including medication adjustments per established protocols.
- Prescribe medications as part of the treatment plan, as directed by the attending physician.
- Organize and assign tasks to other healthcare team members (RN, MA, technicians) to facilitate patient flow.
- Understand current CMS guidelines for E&M coding of medical services.
- Use the electronic medical record (EMR) and possess basic computer skills.
- Complete records for all inpatients as directed by the attending physician.
- Notify the attending physician regarding any unusual events or problems requiring direct consultation.
- Provide routine medical management of inpatient care, including ordering of diagnostic tests, labs, x‑rays, medications (within PA scope), nutrition and adjunctive care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and communicate treatment plans with orthopedic physicians, nursing staff, and families.
- Manage discharge of patients with appropriate disposition and follow‑up planning.
- Make assessment of emergency conditions in conjunction with the attending physician and implement appropriate management.
Special Requirements
- Availability after hours or on weekends varies by physician and circumstance. May be requested for sports physicals, sporting events, or clinic coverage on nights or weekends.
- May be required to remain available or be called to assist the attending physician for on‑call responsibilities.
- May be requested to assist in triage or management of an emergency department patient or after‑hour call from a patient of the practice.
- May be requested to serve as an informal educator or formal clinical preceptor for students, including ATC, PA, and fellows.
- Graduate of a CAAHEP‑approved Physician Assistant Training program.
- Certified by the NCCPA or eligible to sit for the exam.
- Licensed or eligible for licensing as a PA in Ohio and other appropriate states.
- If prescriptive authority is requested, provide evidence of prescriptive authority eligibility as approved by the State Medical Board of Ohio.
- Maintain CME hours for recertification (50 hrs CME I and 50 hrs CME II) every two years and successful completion of the recertification exam every six years, plus State of Ohio licensure per guidelines.
This position does not have any direct reports but provides training and guidance to clinic support staff and other staff as appropriate. Responsibilities include making recommendations for hiring, corrective actions, terminations, and performance evaluations of clinical staff.
