Refrigeration Engineer

Gray AES is seeking to add a Refrigeration Engineer to its team, with the position based in one of our offices located in Atlanta, GA;
Birmingham, AL;
Cincinnati, OH;
Charlotte, NC;
Dallas, TX;
Lexington, KY; or Louisville, KY.

• Assist in the design and documentation of refrigeration systems under the supervision of senior engineers.
• Support the development of design approaches for ammonia, CO₂, and synthetic refrigeration systems, including temperature and humidity control strategies.
• Participate in system evaluations for condition, capacity, and efficiency, contributing to reports and recommendations.
• Help generate layouts, sizing, and equipment selections for primary and secondary refrigeration systems (e.g., chilled water, glycol, brine).
• Use AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM tools to draft refrigeration and process cooling designs.
• Assist in preparing design criteria and bid packages for subcontractor pricing.
• Collaborate with senior engineers to review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and perform site visits.
• Attend internal and client meetings to gain exposure to project coordination and communication.
• Contribute to the updating of engineering standards and participate in team knowledge sharing.
• Begin involvement in industry organizations such as IIAR, RETA, and ASHRAE to support professional development.
• Other duties may be assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Professional Engineering License is required.
• 3+ years of experience in refrigeration design; preference for food and beverage processing facilities and cold storage.
• Basic understanding of discipline-specific codes and standards, such as IMC, IIAR, ASHRAE, and NFPA.
• Strong interest in refrigeration systems and building mechanical design.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD and Revit; willingness to learn BIM workflows and load calculation tools.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a collaborative and proactive mindset.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and demonstrate professional integrity.
• Eager to grow professionally and contribute to multidisciplinary coordination efforts.
