The Ideal Candidate Has:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a practical approach to complex technical challenges.
- Hands-on research experience and the ability to independently plan, execute, and troubleshoot experiments.
- Interest in developing imaging technologies that integrate hardware, software, automation, and quantitative analysis.
- Strong attention to detail when evaluating experimental data.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a disciplined approach to documenting and explaining technical work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and prototype imaging hardware and supporting software.
- Integrate and evaluate components that impact image capture.
- Develop and apply image-processing and image-analysis methods.
- Design and conduct experiments to evaluate image quality and overall system performance.
- Analyze images and experimental data using different scientific computing tools.
- Identify technical challenges, recommend improvements, and document system designs, experimental methods, results, and key learnings.
- Communicate findings to multidisciplinary partners and deliver a working prototype, validated workflow, or quantitative evidence of improved performance.
Job Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Imaging Science, Applied Physics, or a closely related quantitative engineering or scientific discipline.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience conducting independent research and communicating technical results.
- Hands-on experience with experimental research, engineering development, computational methods, or hardware prototyping.
- Experience using Python, MATLAB, or a similar scientific programming environment for data analysis, algorithm development, or experimental research.
- Available to work a 12-week internship from May/early June to August in the summer of 2027. It has the expectation to be in the office 4-5 days per week at our Mason Business & Innovation Center location.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing, integrating, calibrating, or testing imaging systems.
- Experience with optics, illumination, camera systems, automated positioning or motion-control hardware, and different imaging techniques.
- Experience developing computer-vision methods for image registration, object detection, quality assessment, and quantitative measurement.
- Experience developing and applying deep-learning workflows using PyTorch, Tensor Flow, or similar frameworks.
